About the Item

Charlotte Abramow is a Belgian photographer and filmmaker whose work combines seriousness and absurdity. She began taking pictures of her friends at the age of 7, and became passionate about image-making at the age of 13. By 16, she was an intern at the Recontres D’arles, where she met Paolo Reversi, who later wrote an article about her images for Polka Magazine in 2011: “The Fragility and the Soul of a Warrior.” In 2013, she moved to Paris to study at Gobellins, L’Ecole de l’Image, where she graduated in 2015. She was a finalist for the Prix Picto de la Jeune Photographie de Mode in France in 2013, and was the winner of the Prix Picto de la Jeune Photographie de Mode the following year in 2014. In 2017, Charlotte started to collaborate with Angèle directing videos such as La Loi de Murphy and Je veux tes yeux. In 2018 she created a video for International Women’s Day, using the song Les Passantes by Georges Brassens. The clip was censored on YouTube for “offensive content.” This was reversed after it was met with protest by users, and the piece later won the Women’s Rights Prize awarded by the State Secretariat for Gender Equality. In 2019, Charlotte directed Angèle’s feminist video clip Balance Ton Quoi (96M views on YouTube). The clip questions the roles of justice and education in the fight for equality and presents a comedy vignette in dialogue with Pierre Niney. At the age of 25, Charlotte held her first workshop at the Rencontres d’Arles, 9 years after meeting Paolo Roversi there as an intern. The same year, her book Maurice, Tristesse et rigolade was a finalist for the Nadar Prize. At the beginning of 2020, she conceived and directed “Le Petit Manuel Sex Education” for Netflix, for the release of season 2 of Sex Education. This 64-page editorial object on the theme of sex education is made up of photos and texts and was distributed free of charge in France. She was also part of the collective show, The Female Lens, at RICHARD TAITTINGER GALLERY in NYC. In 2021, Charlotte held her first solo exhibition in France, Premiere Page, at the Fisheye Gallery in Aries from June to September. The exhibition traced ten years of photography and highlighted the evolution of the artist’s view on women. Whatever the medium and the subject, Charlotte’s motive is to tell the human story in a poetic and metaphorical way.

Hand-coloured tableau of a weeping spirit and her guardians, immobilised in marble. Together these works act as tales contained in a fictional sculpture hall, in direct reaction to Andre Malraux’s 1947 Le Musee Imaginaire (Museum Without Walls). Hand-coloured portrait of a bird-like spirit, immobilised in marble, cleansing in a spring-time bath.
