General Idea
For F From F

1977

About the Item

In 1967, General Idea was founded in Toronto by AA Bronson (b. 1946), Felix Partz (1945-1994), and Jorge Zontal (1944-1994). Over the course of 25 years, they made a significant contribution to postmodern and conceptual art in Canada and beyond. The group was both prolific and multi-disciplinary long before it became de rigueur. They worked with a wide range of media including photography, sculpture, painting, mail art, video, installations, multiples, and performance. With their subversive approach and interest in parody and appropriation, General Idea addressed a broad range of social and art-world issues including the AIDS crisis, consumerism, media consumption, and the cult of the artist. Another significant force of General Idea's practice was their contribution to the discourse around LGBT identity in the 1970's and beyond. Whether directly or obliquely GI explored gender and sexuality in their typically subversive and playful approach. "For F from F" includes four Polaroids, each featuring Felix against a striking blood-orange backdrop. He wears a black t-shirt that reads "FETISH" and is photographed in various stages of bondage and undress. However upon closer inspection it is revealed that the "leather" wrist and armbands are actually electrical tape. It is important to emphasize that many of the images, references and language, related to Queer sexuality were far more provocative and arresting 50 years ago. One of these four images was included in the summer 1978 issues of General Idea's FILE Magazine, an appropriation of LIFE Magazine. This work, "For F from F" was included in General Idea's 1994 retrospective "Haute Culture: General Idea" at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Positioned within the larger narrative of the retrospective, these images provided a compelling glimpse into the artist's exploration of identity, sexuality, and societal norms over three decades. Bar Back
By Attila Richard Lukacs
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Attila Richard Lukacs (b. 1962) is one of Canada's most distinctive if not revolutionary Canadian figurative painters. Lukacs established his reputation in the 1980s by creating astonishing large-scale paintings that depicted skinheads, construction workers, and other masculine archetypes in elaborate and erotic scenes. The physical presence of the Lukacs' male subjects stands out as one of the artist's most distinctive aesthetic elements. With meticulous attention to form and proportions, Lukacs skillfully renders his young men with expressive brushwork and an intense, moody palette reminiscent of the old masters. Despite the monumental scale of his canvases, Lukacs begins his creative process with a much more intimate and modern-day tool: the Polaroid. Because of its immediacy and simplicity, it became an essential part of his process in the 80's and 90's. As a result, the artist amassed a trove of over 1,200 Polaroids that depict lovers, friends, and anonymous models in various poses that serve as a starting point for his paintings. In this grid of Polaroids, "Bar Back" is a young man posing nude on top of a first aid kit. The exceptional warmth and rich hues infuse this series of 12 Polaroids with a sensual and painterly quality, a characteristic that is undoubtably present throughout the artist's oeuvre. From 2009-2012 a large touring exhibition devoted to Lukacs' Polaroids was shown at several museums across Canada including Museum London and the Art Gallery of Alberta. Joshua's Muse II from the series Joshua Tales - 21st Century, Polaroid, Nude
By Sven van Driessche
Located in Morongo Valley, CA
Joshua's Muse II from the series Joshua Tales 30x30cm, Edition of 7, 2017. Archival Color Print on Pearl photo paper, based on the original Polaroid. Signed on the back with Certificate. Not mounted. Whether in color and black and white, van Driessche’s photos marry the atmospheric qualities of integral and instant pack films with the sensuality of his models. The effect is often painterly, intimate, delicate. The softness and vulnerability of the nude feminine form is often juxtaposed with untamed landscapes or graphic urban architecture. Other photos in the series read like fine art paintings, with luminous colors and classic compositions. Van Driessche has traveled all over the world, taking photos wherever he goes. These days, he often schedules photo shoots with models when he travels, working with both professionals and amateurs. Despite being a perfectionist in his photography, van Driessche likes the unpredictable nature of expired film. He embraces its inherent perfections. He says it is thrilling when an instant photo develops before your eyes, and it happens to be exactly what you were hoping for. And equally frustrating when, for whatever reason, the photo just doesn’t work. He says that you have to be very sure of everything, the composition, the lighting, the poses, before pushing the button. Instant photography requires more thought and more patience than other forms of photography, but the rewards are worth the effort. His work has been widely featured, having appeared in Dreck Magazine, Tata Magazine, 100 Volume 1, Latent Magazine, Hylas Magazine, and Fine Art Photo Magazine. He has been interviewed by the on-line magazines Whataroll and Kaltblut and he recently participated in a group exhibition at the Brick Lane Gallery in London in March 2017. Van Driessche cites these photographers as his influences: Anton Corbjin, for his square format and black and white images; Helmut Newton for his nudes; Stephanie Schneider...
