THE ARTIST:
Michaele Vollbracht (1947–2018) was an American artist, fashion designer, and celebrated illustrator whose career blurred the boundaries between couture and visual art. Best known as the head designer for Bill Blass and creator of his own eponymous fashion label in the early 1980s, Vollbracht earned early acclaim as an illustrator for The New York Times, The New Yorker, and Women's Wear Daily. His bold, fluid ink drawings earned comparisons to Antonio Lopez and Erté, while his signature style—lush, dramatic figures with painterly flair—made him a favorite of Geoffrey Beene, Stephen Sprouse, and Halston.
Vollbracht’s creative language drew on Pop Art, commercial design, and fashion editorial photography, and his work often carried a visual punch similar to artists like Tom Wesselmann, Richard Bernstein, and Patrick Nagel. Later in life, he returned to studio work and created one-of-a-kind mixed media pieces that reflected his lifelong interest in celebrity, glamour, and visual spectacle. His works remain highly sought after by collectors of fashion illustration, Pop Surrealism, and postwar American design.
