About the Item

Pierre & Gilles (Pierre Commoy and Gilles Blanchard) began their creative collaboration in France during the late 1970’s. Together they created a vivid fantasy world of their own, a fusion of painting and photography, pop culture and art history, kitsch and glamour. Subjects are costumed and situated in dreamlike mise en scènes. Pierre is responsible for the photographs and Gilles paints the image once printed to canvas. Together they create artwork that is full of magic and queer mischief. Their unmistakable aesthetic originates from graphic printing and French commercial photography popularized in the 50’s, a time when Pierre & Gilles were growing up in France. However outside of France the references seem more aligned with 80's porn, Disney fantasies and James Bidgood. Autoportrait dans un coeur “Self-portrait in a heart” is an original laminated print held in a tinted resin frame in the shape of a backlit heart. This illuminated sculptural piece is a prime example of Pierre & Gilles’ manipulation of the photographic medium. Pierre & Gilles rose to fame after producing portraits of famous icons such as Mick Jagger and Andy Warhol. They continued to feature celebrities and friends but in this self-portrait they reveal the dynamic duo that they are. In the image both men are suited in sailor uniforms and navy caps adorned with their names in glitter. They each hold one side of a ship’s wheel, an illustration of their united bond. This piece is an altar showcasing the driving force of Pierre & Gilles’ passion, their romantic and artistic partnership. “Autoportrait dans un coeur” Incised signature and numbered verso mirror, photo, PVC, electrical connector France, 2005 25.75”H 29.75”W 2.5”D Edition of 99 Very good condition Note: requires plug adapter for North America.

Dutch Hearts
By Jim Dine
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Jim Dine was one of the key artists who defined American Pop Art in the 1960s. Like Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol, Dine appropriated quintessential American images and icons. He used ubiquitous and familiar forms, like tools, food, and stylized clothing, as the basis for bold and colorful compositions inspired by Dada assemblage, Abstract Expressionism, and collage techniques. The "Heart" is the most celebrated icon in Dine's oeuvre. He uses its motif to explore pattern, color, and texture across mediums. This classic and iconic example of Jim Dine's hearts from his most sought-after period. Four coral hearts, adorned with flecks of blood orange, hover in the center of the work. The background features tactile grapefruit splotches that dance across the sheet to reveal and accentuate stretches of negative space. The result is a striking illusion of depth that simultaneously camouflages the hearts and accelerates them to the foreground of the work. Questions about this piece?
