Bert Stern
What's It All About from The Last Sitting

1962, printed at later date

About the Item

This piece is an original chromogenic print that was hand developed from the original negative by Bert Stern. This photo is part of The Last Sitting portfolio, taken six weeks before Marilyn Monroe’s death in 1962 and published in the 1970s. This sitting took place over three days at the Bel Air Hotel in Los Angeles and yielded over 2,500 images. Ten images were selected for the portfolio and printed in a limited edition of 250. The edition was broken up in half: 125 portfolios have a glossy finish and the other 125 portfolios have a matte finish, making a total 250 portfolios plus some artist proofs. The glossy pieces had to be numbered on the back, which is why you see a variation in the placement of the edition numbers. This piece is hand signed and numbered from the edition of 250 on the back and bears the 1962 Bert Stern/ Edward Weston copyright. The image measures 19 x 18.5 inches and the sheet measures 24 x 20 inches. The framed dimensions are 27.5 x 26 inches.

This piece is a pigment print from the original negative, shot by Milton Greene in 1955. This photograph of Marilyn Monroe is from a photoshoot which became known as "The Pekingese Dog Sitting" because Marilyn was accompanied by her hair stylist's dog during other photographs from the same series. Marilyn was shot in a gorgeous Bill Blass gown which became an integral part of the series. This black gown juxtaposed with the stark red background make these photographs hard to forget. These photographs were seen for the first time in 2013 after being locked away and unpublished for over 50 years until Andrew Weiss Gallery...
