About Flower Beauty Boys Series : "These young men want to look like the selfies they make daily, perfect images retouched on their smartphone. The boundaries between virtuality and reality fades. The physical is manipulated as a retouched photograph. Their virtuality becomes their reality. This project questions identity and opens new perspectives. These young men move away from the usual codes of masculinity and distance themselves from the diktat of society around manhood." Corinne Mariaud’s interest lies in how bodies are represented. The young Asian women and men whose elusive features she has portrayed in two emblematic series, "Fake i Real Me" (2017) and "Flower Beauty Boys" (2018), are obsessed with indulging in transformations of every kind so that they can deconstruct gender codes and social codes. "Fake i Real Me" is a series of portraits of young women who are prepared to do anything - cosmetic surgery, contact lenses, hair colouring – to achieve their ideal beauty; "Flower Beauty Boys" is a collection of portraits of non-binary boys who use make-up in order to undermine the clichés of traditional virility. --------------- Based in Asia for two years (2015-2017) Corinne Mariaud produced two series - "Fake i Real Me" and "Flower Beauty Boys" - which question the obsession for beauty and pressure over physical appearance among young people in Singapore, Seoul and Tokyo. Her "Fake i Real Me" series was part of “Human +, the future of our species” exhibition in Singapore Art Science Museum 2017 Her photographic series evoke, through the figure of the body, the quest for identity, the struggle of the individual to preserve singularity in a standardised world. It questions the woman' image and her place in our contemporary society, the diktat of appearance, cliché about femininity and masculinity. Corinne Mariaud (b. 1964) is a French photographer who lives and works in Paris. After graduating from Duperré National School of Arts in Paris, Corinne Mariaud started working as a portrait and fashion photographer for numerous French magazines (Liberation, Le Monde, Marie-Claire, Marie-France…), before turning to Fine Art photography.Corinne was inspired to become a photographer when discovering the work of the American artist Cindy Sherman. She was also fascinated by the drawings of Robert Longo and the humour of Erwin Wurm. Her work points to a range of literary and artistic influences, and draws from the work of artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Nancy Spero or Kiki Smith who have, in their own ways, questioned the female identity. She also feels deeply inspired by writers such as Virginia Wolf, Susan Sontag, Annie Ermaux, Virginie Despentes and Paul Preciado.
