The Providence Athenaeum Library #1, Rhode Island by Franck Bohbot is a 30" x 40" C-Type Matte Print from a Limited Edition of 5.
The symmetry of this composition by Franck Bohbot is only interrupted by the mass of differently colored books on the twenty shelves that occupy the space of this view of the Providence Athenaeum Library in Rhode Island.
One could almost say that light is the main subject matter of this composition. Daylight streams through the flat skylights that cover the central section of the roof, while spherical electrical lights line the central hall to provide maximum illumination.
The Providence Library Athenaeum was founded in 1753 by a group of bibliophiles who did not posses the means to have imported European titles. Prior to the library existing, a sort of exchange system was established by this book-loving association, supported by a modest subscription fee.
The association eventually opened its own library in 1836, and named it The Athenaeum after the Greek goddess of wisdom, Athena. Simultaneously historic and prestigious, the Providence Athenaeum Library was appreciated by Edgar Allen Poe and H. P. Lovecraft.
The universal commonality in this body of work is the complete lack of human presence. The lights are on, daylight streams through the skylight windows, one door is even wide open - and yet the space itself is absent of library-goers or bibliophiles.
