“Easy on the Eyes: Eleanor” Cinematic Photograph of a Beautiful Young Man

2010

About the Item

“Easy on the Eyes: Eleanor“ is a staged photograph of an attractive young man standing in a suburban backyard. In this cinematic photo series, I explore the female gaze by providing visual pleasure specifically designed for a female viewer—though others may look over her shoulder. Each scene includes a male character depicted in mid-narrative and an “implied woman” somewhere just outside the frame. She is not visible, but we see her gardening gloves, spade, and tin box near a mysterious hole in the ground. He is the photograph’s subject matter, but she is the narrative’s protagonist. Each photograph is titled for the female character in the quoted text. The text panel and image are printed together on a single sheet of paper. The implied narrative of the photograph is juxtaposed with a passage from a novel or short story by a prominent female author describing a male character. The text disrupts, misdirects, and complicates the implied narrative of the photographic image (read text below). This photograph is an Archival Pigment Print on Cotton Fiber Paper, printed in a limited-edition of 10. The standard print sizes are 15 x 30” and 20 x 40”. The photograph is signed and numbered on the back and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Prints are sold unframed; framing may be arranged for an additional cost. Free shipping may be available from 1st Dibs. Apply code: FREESHIP. Text panel: “Tales of Burning Love" by Louise Erdrich. He had the muscular and easy-moving grace of a former high school all-star. He swiveled sideways, posed a moment near the machine, raised his eyebrows, and sauntered loose-limbed over to Eleanor. Her silence and solemnity seemed to crack his confidence, however, and as he neared her he stuffed his hands into the pockets of a light denim jacket, hesitated. A cloud flapped across the moon and the wind rushed overhead. “I had to see you,” he explained. Her eyes were full of him. She hadn’t been this close to a man for months and he smelled, elusively, of earthly things like paint and wool and fresh-cut lumber. She stepped nearer. He cleared his throat and spoke roughly. “What the hell are you doing here, stuck away like this?”
