“Easy on the Eyes: Janie” Portrait Photograph of a Beautiful Man with Goldfish

2010

About the Item

“Easy on the Eyes: Janie“ is a staged photograph of an attractive man sitting in a restaurant. On the table we see goldfish swimming in a clear plastic bag. In this cinematic photo series, I explore the female gaze by providing visual pleasure specifically designed for a female viewer—though others may look over her shoulder. Each scene includes a male character depicted in mid-narrative and an “implied woman” somewhere just outside the frame. She is not visible, but we do see her purse and lipstick marked glass. He is the photograph’s subject matter, but she is the narrative’s protagonist. Each photograph is titled for the female character in the quoted text. The text panel and image are printed together on a single sheet of paper. The implied narrative of the photograph is juxtaposed with a passage from a novel or short story by a prominent female author describing a male character. The text disrupts, misdirects, and complicates the implied narrative of the photographic image (read text below). This photograph is an Archival Pigment Print on Cotton Fiber Paper, printed in a limited-edition of 10. The standard print sizes are 15 x 30” and 20 x 40”. The photograph is signed and numbered on the back and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Prints are sold unframed; framing may be arranged for an additional cost. Free shipping may be available from 1st Dibs. Apply code: FREESHIP. Text panel: “Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston. He set it up and began to show her and she found herself glowing inside. Somebody wanted her to play. Somebody thought it natural for her to play. That was even nice. She looked him over and got little thrills from every one of his good points. Those full, lazy eyes with the lashes curling sharply away like drawn scimitars. The lean, over-padded shoulders and narrow waist. Even nice! He was jumping her king! She screamed in protest against losing the king she had had such a hard time acquiring. Before she knew it she had grabbed his hand to stop him. He struggled gallantly to free himself. That is he struggled, but not hard enough to wrench a lady’s fingers.
