About the Item

This contemporary abstract expressionist figurative portrait of three figures, "Shared Force", was created by French artist Natalya Mougenot as part of her ongoing series dedicated to portraits of women. In this series, the artist explores the themes of identity, unity, and anonymity, reflecting on the collective dimension of human life and the strength found in togetherness. “Before even starting on this piece, I knew exactly what themes I would like to depict,” Natalya explains. “I was meditating on the themes of identity, unity, and anonymity.” The painting presents three faceless female figures, close to one another, standing in quiet harmony. “It’s like a symbol of togetherness, sisterhood, or a shared experience,” she says. Their absence of faces is intentional: “I want my viewers to focus on their body language, on the colors, on the emotional resonance. This piece is not about individuality but about a shared force.” Her brushwork is raw, visible, and deliberately free. “I depicted distorted proportions on purpose as well as simplified forms,” she shares, “because I want to move away from realism, emphasizing emotion over detail. My brushstrokes are harsh and visible as I want to communicate movement and intensity.” The figures are enriched with vibrant layers of red, blue, and yellow, creating luminous contrasts of warm and cool tones that evoke both intimacy and anonymity. “My main motivation was to show that together we share this common collective force which gives us strength to battle against challenges,” the artist reflects. Mougenot acknowledges the stylistic influences in her work: “As in many of my pieces, I combine several styles to reach the result I want. Here I feel close to an abstract expressionist figurative piece with warm colors influenced by Fauvism, Henri Matisse.” Through this fusion of abstraction, expression, and figuration, Shared Force transcends portraiture. The faceless figures become universal archetypes, embodying collective strength, emotional intensity, and shared human essence. Her multicultural background and personal experience inform her bold, expressive works, which have found homes in private collections around the world. Natalya’s distinctive visual language blends Abstract Expressionism, Impressionism, Art Naïf, and Art Brut—resulting in paintings that are raw, instinctive, and emotionally resonant. Across her work, three values guide her: authenticity, sincerity, and honesty. “Authenticity is everything,” she says. “People can always feel when something is real—or when it’s not. I want my work to be honest, to come from a place that’s true.” In addition to painting, Natalya is also a passionate photographer. Her photographic work—also featured on this platform—mirrors her painterly sensibility: a poetic, observational approach that captures the quiet power of everyday life. For her, photography is both inspiration and a form of presence, often serving as visual sketches for future paintings or existing as standalone works.
