About the Item

This contemporary expressionist portrait, infused with elements of Fauvism, Post-Impressionism, and Modern Naïve Art, was created by French artist Natalya Mougenot and forms part of her ongoing series Portraits, in which she explores the theme of universal identity. Through this body of work, Mougenot seeks to move beyond fixed categories of gender, age, or cultural belonging, creating figures that stand as mirrors for all of humanity. By stripping away individual markers, she reveals what connects us at our deepest level: the shared essence of being human. The artist reflects: “In this painting, I wanted to say that every human being holds a truth — a kind of secret garden he or she doesn’t want to share with anyone. It is the right of every person to keep something sacred for themselves.” She continues: “In this work, we all wear masks and play roles in order to be accepted into society, into a group or community. But every human being, on the deepest level, knows who he or she truly is — where the truth lies, hidden from others.” Color is her chosen language. Inspired by Matisse and Van Gogh, Mougenot embraces vibrant contrasts — fiery oranges, luminous greens, cobalt blues — to express emotional intensity rather than external likeness. As she explains: “These vivid follies are my instrument, my language to express the emotional intensity of this figure.” The portrait’s universality is underscored by its anonymity. “As you can see, this figure doesn’t have a gender, a sex, or an age, because I want this painting to refer to every human being, whatever the gender or age.” In doing so, Mougenot transforms a single face into a timeless archetype — one that belongs to all viewers and none at once. At the core of Hidden Truth lies the artist’s fidelity to raw emotion and authenticity. “I feel I was totally true to what I felt inside when depicting this painting. Authenticity is at the core of my practice — no staging, no planning, just raw emotions.” The work invites us to reflect on the hidden truths within ourselves, the masks we wear, and the universality of human experience. Raised in a multicultural environment during the Soviet era, her diverse background deeply influences her artistic identity. What began as a therapeutic practice has grown into a rich exploration of themes such as modern femininity, universal identity, resilience, and personal empowerment. Her emotionally resonant works—blending abstraction, portraits, nature, and floral elements—have found homes in private collections across the globe. “Authenticity is everything,” she says. “People can always feel when something is real—or when it’s not. I want my work to be honest, to come from a place that’s true.” In addition to painting, Natalya is also a passionate photographer. Her photographic work—also featured on this platform—mirrors her painterly sensibility: a poetic, observational approach that captures the quiet power of everyday life. For her, photography is both inspiration and a form of presence, often serving as visual sketches for future paintings or existing as standalone works.
