Experimenting with themes of identity and the performative masculinity of homosocial interactions, a juvenile flair exudes the present image, one from a series of 12 belonging to Paul Smith’s 1998 Make My Night series. Through composite manipulation, Smith imagines himself as the selfsame protagonist of the stereotypical laddish ‘night out’, exploring notions of personal self-sacrifice and behavioural performance in the pursuit of social acceptance. Smith’s Hogarthian wit turns itself to familiar masculine clichés: drinking, smoking, and aggression, as well as the homoerotic potential of cross-dressing, urination, and phallic humour. In the present image, the central of three Smiths wears a pair of spectacles sprung with drooping eyes, as the counterpart to his left leans in to lick his cheek, and the other to his right grins cheesily.
The work formerly belonged to the permanent collection of the Saatchi Gallery, London, and formed a central component of the Saatchi 1998 exhibition, Neurotic Realism: Part One. It comes recently from the private collection of a leading British collector of contemporary art.
The Make My Night series was the first in a new style of experimental imagery created by Smith, a surreal composite format which replicated his image as each individual character of the photographic compositions. Intentionally out of focus and highly grained, Smith evokes the informal style of late 1990s digital ‘snapshot’ photography, illustrating the drunken intensities of male adolescence with an unsettled familiarity. Limiting the edition size to five for each image, Smith intended to further their social reality by presenting them unframed on aluminium, with the quality of newly developed print images. This quality is true of the present photograph, in which Smith casts himself as three young men in dinner suits. The central figure wears a purple satin bow tie, an appropriately whimsical subversion of the apparently formal dress code. With the rowdy joy of an after-party, he wears a pair of comical spectacles, and the trio pose together for a drunken selfie.
Smith’s composite work came to the attention of the singer Robbie Williams, who commissioned Smith to photograph the cover for his 2000 studio album, Sing When You’re Winning. Williams appeared in subsequent photographs by Smith, including a take on the present series, entitled Make My Night (Robbie Williams).
Paul M. Smith is a British photographer and educator, known for his distinctive manipulated photographs which often explore themes of heroism and the performative potentialities of human interaction. Smith joined the army at the age of sixteen, initially training as an engineer before becoming a paramedic. He began taking an evening class in photography and spent four years working as a war photographer. Smith left the army to study Fine Art at Coventry University, graduating in 1995, followed by a Master’s degree in photography at the Royal College of Art. It was at the RCA that Smith developed an interest in the construction of masculinity, a focus which culminated with Make My Night. In 2001 Smith was awarded the Vic Ogden Award from the Royal Photographic Society, bestowed for the notable achievement of a photographer aged 35 and under. More recently, Smith works as a senior educator at Coventry University, and works in commercial photography. He has exhibited at The Saatchi Gallery, The National Portrait Gallery, The Photographers’ Gallery, the Australian Centre for Photography, and the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil.
