About the Item
The work offered for sale here is an original vintage silver gelatin print hand created by Halsman hand signed and exhibited at the International Center for Photography.
Philippe Halsman was at one point considered the best photo-portraitist in France. He had an incessant interest in faces: “Every face I see seems to hide—and sometimes fleetingly reveal—the mystery of another human being.” Halsman’s photographs of politicians, celebrities, and intellectuals were featured widely in magazines like LIFE and Vogue. His more famous subjects included the likes of Marc Chagall, Le Corbusier, Audrey Hepburn, and Albert Einstein. He also had a 37-year collaboration with Salvador Dalí, which resulted in several famous surrealist series including the “Dalí’s Mustache” portraits. In the 1950s, Halsman began asking his sitters to jump in front of the camera, because he noticed that doing so paradoxically seemed to relax people. With his background in engineering, Halsman also made groundbreaking photographic inventions, including a twin-lens reflex camera that allowed the operator to see his sitter through a viewfinder.

This photograph was commissioned by Coutts & Co. in 1986. Coutts & Co. is a London-headquartered private bank and wealth manager. Founded in 1692, it is the eighth oldest bank in the world. This is a rare Vintage Silver Bromide Print (1986) in a bespoke exhibition frame; Oak frame, museum mount-board and anti-reflective AR UV protective Art glass. Inspired by fine art movements; from Renaissance to Symbolism, Expressionism and Surrealism film and literature, Griffin began his career taking corporate portraits for Management Today Magazine in the early 1970s, the magazine that took the publishing world by storm, combining hard-hitting editorial with innovative design. Growing up and working in the Industrial Midlands of England, this influenced Griffin to define his aesthetic and install real emotions and character to the people in front of his camera, setting scenes and forging his own imaginative and unique visual language. “I think that Brian (ie. Brian Griffin) is one of the most interesting portrait photographers ever. His portrait photography belongs to another time. Portrait photography today is like so simple, so straightforward, so it seems that all photography portraits are alike. Brian is different and Brian has a craziness in him – a craziness in a way to see the world, and intensity that belongs only to him.” – Francois Hébel, Director, Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson (present), Director, Les Rencontres d’Arles (1986-1987, 2001-2014), in the documentary by Michael Prince...Category
