Long Way Home II - Polaroid, expired, Instantdreams

1999

About the Item

Long Way Home II (Stranger than Paradise) - 1999 20x20cm, Edition of 10, Archival C-Prints, based on a Polaroid Certificate and Signature label, artist Inventory Nr. 251.43, Not mounted. The works of Stefanie Schneider evoke Ed Ruscha's obsession with the American experience, the richness of Georgia O'Keefe's deserts and the loneliness of Edward Hopper's haunting paintings. So how exactly did this German photographer become one of the most important artists of the American narrative of the 20th and 21st century? Stefanie Schneider's Polaroid photography and Andy Warhol's Polaroid photography both hold significance in the realm of instant photography, but they exhibit distinct approaches and contributions to the medium. While Andy Warhol is renowned for his experimentation with Polaroid photography, particularly through his exploration of celebrity portraits and his innovative use of color, Stefanie Schneider's work takes the medium even further in terms of depth and narrative. Schneider's Polaroid photographs go beyond capturing surface aesthetics. She delves into the realm of storytelling and evokes a strong sense of emotion through her compositions. By utilizing expired film and embracing its inherent imperfections, Schneider creates a dreamy and nostalgic quality in her images. Her work often explores themes of longing, loneliness, and the passage of time, inviting viewers to engage with the narratives she presents. In this sense, Schneider's Polaroid photography transcends the medium itself and becomes a vehicle for introspection and contemplation. Warhol's Polaroid photographs have their own artistic merit, often capturing iconic figures and embracing the pop art aesthetic, they tend to emphasize the surface and the iconic status of the subjects. Warhol's approach is more focused on the immediate visual impact rather than delving into deeper narratives or emotions. In terms of pushing the boundaries of Polaroid photography, Stefanie Schneider's work can be seen as a more significant progression. Her use of expired film, combined with her attention to composition, lighting, and vintage aesthetics, creates a distinct and immersive experience for viewers. She expands the possibilities of Polaroid photography by infusing it with a poetic and introspective quality, going beyond the instant capture to explore the realms of memory, time, and personal connection. In summary, Andy Warhol's Polaroid photography is notable for its iconic subject matter and exploration of color, Stefanie Schneider's work takes Polaroid photography to new depths. Her emphasis on storytelling, emotion, and the transformative power of expired film sets her work apart and showcases her ability to elevate the medium into a realm of contemplation and artistic expression. Stefanie Schneider received her MFA in Communication Design at the Folkwang Schule Essen, Germany. Her work has been shown at the Museum for Photography, Braunschweig, Museum für Kommunikation, Berlin, the Institut für Neue Medien, Frankfurt, the Nassauischer Kunstverein, Wiesbaden, Kunstverein Bielefeld, Museum für Moderne Kunst Passau, Les Rencontres d'Arles, Foto -Triennale Esslingen, Bombay Beach Biennale 2018. Landed (Long Way Home) - Polaroid, analog, Contemporary, pop-art
By Stefanie Schneider
Located in Morongo Valley, CA
Landed (Long Way Home) - 1999, 50x50cm, Edition of 25, plus 2 Artist Proofs. Archival C-Print, based on a Polaroid. Signature label and Certificate. Artist Inventory #834. Not mounted. Berlin based artist Stefanie Schneider enlarges expired Polaroid stock into burned-out C-prints. The lossy images almost completely dissolve into lurid color abstractions. The shiny pink of a sex kitten's glittery body suit becomes an electrified, free-floating color field. The vivid, flame-orange hair of a 70's sexploitation film star vibrates against the dusty gray of the sky above an LA desert. Skin tones and facial details in the figures are completely lost. They are refugees from Faster Pussycat...

Owen's Valley (Last Picture Show)
By Stefanie Schneider
Located in Morongo Valley, CA
Owen's Valley (Last Picture Show), 20 x 20 cm, 2001 Edition 5/10, digital C-Print based on a Polaroid, Artist Inventory 1088.05, not mounted Stefanie Schneider's scintillating situations take place in the American West. Situated on the verge of an elusive super-reality, her photographic sequences provide the ambience for loosely woven story lines and a cast of phantasmic characters. Schneider works with the chemical mutations of expired Polaroid film stock. Chemical explosions of color spreading across the surfaces undermine the photograph's commitment to reality and induce her characters into trance-like dream scapes. Like flickering sequences of old road movies Schneider's images seem to evaporate before conclusions can be made - their ephemeral reality manifesting in subtle gestures and mysterious motives. Schneider's images refuse to succumb to reality, they keep alive the confusions of dream, desire, fact, and fiction. Stefanie Schneider received her MFA in Communication Design at the Folkwang Schule Essen, Germany. Her work has been shown at the Museum for Photography, Braunschweig, Museum für Kommunikation, Berlin, the Institut für Neue Medien, Frankfurt, the Nassauischer Kunstverein, Wiesbaden, Kunstverein Bielefeld, Museum für Moderne Kunst Passau, Les Rencontres d'Arles, Foto -Triennale Esslingen. “It was Stefanie Schneider, who inspired me to start the company THE IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT after seeing her work, which seems to achieve the possible from the impossible, creating the finest of art out of the most basic of mediums and materials. Indeed, after that one day, I was so impressed with her photography that I realized Polaroid film could not be allowed to disappear. Being at the precise moment in time where the world was about to lose Polaroid, I seized the moment and have put all my efforts and passion into saving Polaroid film. For that, I thank Stefanie Schneider almost exclusively, who played a bigger role than anyone in saving this American symbol of photography.” –Florian Kaps, March 8th 2010 (“Doc” Dr. Florian Kaps, founder of “The Impossible Project”) Exhibitions Selected (selected) 2018 Participation Bombay Beach Biennale, Bombay Beach, USA (G) March Available to All, Rough Play Projects - Site Specific, Joshou Tree, USA (G) curated by Deborah Martin...
