The people and scenes in Stefanie Schneider's photographic work possess a suggestive allure. Her photographic series, captured in the southwestern United States, appear as mysteriously alienated sequences from long-forgotten road movies, overlaid with dreamlike narrative moments. They are enchanting yet unsettling views on the edge of some dramatic action.
The cycle "29 Palms, CA" was created under the glaring, shimmering light of the Californian sun, in this specific location indicated in the title, yet amidst the vast American nowhere. Sparingly clothed actors in unspectacular snapshots: smoking, getting a manicure, wielding water guns by the swimming pool, amateurishly made up and styled with colorful wigs. Others, including the artist herself, pose casually for the camera. Above all these slightly scratched beauties, blurred landscape details, and rundown interiors, there lies a peculiar magical sense of lostness that doesn't quite fit with the radiant blue sky. Are these real or staged snapshots? Do they follow a director's instructions or are they a byproduct of another story? The artist subtly plays with cinematic genres and their perceptual stereotypes. The script is written by the viewer themselves.
Stefanie Schneider works with the instant photography technique commonly used for snapshots. In doing so, she incorporates the uncontrollable randomness. To achieve the painterly smudge of blur and faded color, she uses long-expired Polaroid material, from which she produces enlarged C-Prints.
