Stefanie Schneider
Poolside - Contemporary, 21st Century, Polaroid, Figurative Photograph

1999

About the Item

Pool Side (29 Palms, CA) - 1999 Edition 5/5, 20x20cm. Archival C-Print, based on the Polaroid. Artist inventory Number 619. Signature label and Certificate. Not mounted. Poolside is a powerful and enigmatic piece that delves into the complexities of identity, longing, and the passage of time. It carries the quiet weight of introspection while also invoking the intense yet subtle emotions that emerge when one steps into the world of memories and desires. The image features the artist herself, submerged in the still waters of a pool, her delicate form wrapped in a negligee that speaks of both vulnerability and defiance. This haunting moment, captured in a Polaroid photograph, holds within it the essence of a larger narrative—a dialogue between the self and the spaces one inhabits. Much like the great photographers who have explored American mythology, Schneider's work offers a German perspective on the American West, a place brimming with open spaces, but also imbued with a quiet loneliness. Her image resonates with the spirit of the American desert, where the landscape itself becomes a mirror for the human experience. Poolside is not just an intimate self-portrait but a piece that draws upon the themes of isolation, impermanence, and nostalgia that run throughout her larger body of work. Schneider's use of expired film introduces an element of uncertainty into the composition, transforming the photograph into something that exists in a place between reality and memory. The graininess and muted tones evoke a sense of time slipping through one’s fingers, creating a dreamlike quality that invites the viewer to reflect not only on the image before them but on the personal connections and fleeting moments that define their own lives. In this way, Schneider transcends the technicalities of the Polaroid medium, using it as a vehicle for introspection rather than simply capturing a moment in time. Just as the vast American West is often seen through the eyes of outsiders, Schneider brings a fresh perspective to a familiar narrative. Her German upbringing provides her with an external lens through which she can explore universal themes of longing and escape—symbols deeply rooted in the heart of the American myth. But while Schneider's work recalls the stark beauty of iconic American landscapes, it is deeply personal, a reflection of her own inner world and the stories that dwell there. Poolside exists within this space of personal and collective memory, where the medium itself becomes a tool to explore not just a moment, but the passage of time and the experiences that make us who we are. In this, it speaks to the very essence of what it means to create a narrative that speaks not only to the viewer but to the self, offering a rare glimpse into a world that is both intimate and universal. Stefanie Schneider's MFA in Communication Design from the Folkwang Schule Essen, Germany, has paved the way for her groundbreaking work, which has been shown in prestigious venues such as the Museum for Photography, Braunschweig, Museum für Kommunikation, Berlin, the Institut für Neue Medien, Frankfurt, the Nassauischer Kunstverein, Wiesbaden, Kunstverein Bielefeld, Museum für Moderne Kunst Passau, Les Rencontres d'Arles, Foto-Triennale Esslingen, and the Bombay Beach Biennale 2018. Through her photographs, Schneider continues to push the boundaries of instant photography, transforming the medium into a space for reflection and emotional resonance.
