About the Item

Untitled (Cowboys and Angels) – 2005 Edition of 5, plus 2 Artist Proofs 100x60 cm Archival C-Print, based on a Polaroid Certificate and Signature Label Artist Inventory No. 1346 Unmounted Stefanie Schneider’s Artist Statement: Desolation and solitude define the core of my Polaroid photographs, complemented by the Japanese concept of Wabi-Sabi—the appreciation of "flawed beauty." The expired Polaroid film I use serves as a mirror for love and loneliness, allowing me to reflect on the impermanence that pervades our lives. My work embraces this vision: a world that celebrates imperfection without retreating from its realities. The pristine, idealized viewpoint—the notion of perfection—is crumbling, and it has been for a long time. My work, once dismissed as blurry, broken, or even "botched," challenges the traditional notion of beauty. It stands as an invitation to accept imperfection, to acknowledge that flaws are part of our shared human experience. It’s a difficult but liberating shift, especially in an age where the cracks we used to hide are now in plain view. We all fear the truth of our finitude, yet the truth persists. It’s a concept that has troubled humanity for centuries, reinforced by organized religion, which itself is waning. A reminder that everything has its time—even God. This truth, while daunting, is undeniable, and my work, born in the analog era before the dominance of digital photography and Instagram, is an attempt to capture this essence. The medium I chose—Polaroid film—captures color like candy, even in its degradation. The chemical imperfections of expired film add a sense of endearment to the process, offering a visual representation of my own acceptance of life’s imperfections. This combination of rich, sweet colors and the unpredictable nature of expired Polaroid film brought me a sense of peace. It was as though it perfectly embodied my vision of the world—raw, unpolished, and liberating. The imperfections in my work mirror our own life’s blemishes, offering not only permission to accept them but to even celebrate them. We can split the world into two camps: those who embrace imperfection and those who don't. For those who can truly see it, there’s no going back. To acknowledge this perspective is to enter a new realm of understanding, where our previous ideals of beauty are forever altered. In my work, I create space for magic to manifest. I rely on the serendipity of the moment—especially when that moment arises from turmoil. The disruption of balance is essential for allowing unknown forces to shape the outcome, contributing to the moment in ways we can’t predict. This is what my work means to me. There are no rules in art. I delve into my emotions, ground them in my consciousness, and envision them as dreams. Dreams are the foundation of emotion, a bridge to our subconscious, and my work invites you to insert yourself into that dream. My photographs are filled with a cup of nostalgia, a bowl of emotions, and a generous sprinkle of sex—because it is in this place of primal instinct that truth resides.
