About the Item
The present 19th-century photograph is a portrait of a gentleman wearing a suit. Ambrotypes such as this became popular in Europe and the United States following the widespread success of the Daguerreotype, and then with the rise of the wet collodion process. The wet collodion process allows the photographer to do three things: they can make a direct positive print by developing the collodion on the surface of a metal sheet, called a tintype. Secondly, they could develop the collodion on a sheet of glass to make a negative from which to make multiple positive prints. And finally, like we see in this example, they could develop the collodion on a sheet of glass and then back the glass with black paper or velvet to make a positive image, called the ambrotype. The most common subjects of ambrotypes, as with he Daguerreotype, was the portrait. Unlike in years past where painted portrait miniatures were expensive trinkets of the wealthy, with photography, the average person could afford to have an exact likeness of themselves or of a loved one.
