About the Item

Early Signed Portrait of Giuseppe Garibaldi is an albumen print signed on clichè and dated 26 June 1860. Excellent conditions, size 11 x 17,5 This very rare and unpublished photograph portrays the hero of the "Italian Risorgimento", wearing for the first time the famous red shirt and the bowler hat. This uniform was worn by Garibaldi during the "Expedition of Thousand" and became one of the undisputed symbols of the Risorgimento. In the dedication with autograph, written on a cliché and applied on the lower edge and folded on the back, it reports "Palermo 1860". This portrait represents a unique autograph testimony of the first great campaign of the Italian Risorgimento commanded by Garibaldi, who, starting from Genoa, reached Marsala with just over a thousand volunteers. The photograph can therefore be placed at a time when the celebrity of the General began, but he was still considered a revolutionary without a homeland. In the portrait Garibaldi appears proud and imposing, flaunting the long red shirt out of his trousers and the sword hanging from the belt. The photograph seems to have been taken in an improvised context, with a confused background and a pavement that looks like earth. On the contrary, the execution technique is excellent, the albumen layer is still very bright and retains a clear color scheme. Unfortunately the author is not indicated in the press but could be placed in the same area as the "Mille" or the sequel of famous foreign photographers who closely followed the military events.
