Gelatin silver print 20 x 16 inches, sheet 17.5 x 12.625 inches, image Roy Schatt was born in New York in 1909. He was first trained as a painter studying with N.C. Wyeth. He went on to take classes at the Art Students League and later the Corcoran School of Art. He then earned a living as a commercial illustrator working for Warner Bros. In his mid-20s, Schatt began experimenting with photography. In the 1930s, Schatt created murals under the “New Deal” program as part of the WPA. In the early 1940s, he served in the US Army. By the late 1940s and early 1950s, Schatt shifted his interest primarily to photography, being named by Lee Strasberg as the Official Photographer at The Actors Studio.

James Dean posed leaning with his hand on a fence post while filming a scene for "Giant", 1955. Giant was the last of James Dean's three films as a leading actor, and earned him his second and last Academy Award nomination – he was killed in a car crash before the film was released. Nick Adams was called in to do some voice dubbing for Dean's role in "Giant". After his death in a car crash, Dean became the first actor to receive a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and remains the only actor to have had two posthumous acting nominations.
