About the Item
Scott McFarland is the most successful conceptual photographer from the third generation of artists associated with “The Vancouver School.”
During his bachelor’s in visual art at UBC, McFarland studied alongside acclaimed artists such as Roy Arden and Liz Magor and worked as a studio assistant to Jeff Wall.
McFarland’s large-scale photographs are compilations of multiple digital images printed within a single frame.
The artist's unconventional approach to photography and photoshop serves to morph reality into something fabricated.
This work is included in McFarland "Empire" series, where he expands on his interest in gardens by exploring new terrain south of the border in Huntington Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California.
This dynamic image features a bed of exotic succulents densely arranged under the radiant California sun. The composition has an otherworldly quality, prompting the viewer to imagine what it would be like if they were able to experience the abundant vegetation first-hand.
McFarland's work is represented in numerous collections around the globe, including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
In 2013, the AGO presented a major exhibition of McFarland’s work: Scott McFarland - Snow, Shacks, Streets, Shrubs.
