Hans Withoos career spans more than twenty years worldwide. After graduating from the Art Academy. He specializes in fashion and video/photography. Although highly successful in his international fashion work, he is also prolific in his autonomous work, making many photography series over the years. Mostly situated in recognizable places and cities around the world.
His fascination is with beauty in all its aspects. In his new series: ” Still Life” he brings the beauty and the light of the 17-century Dutch old masters into life again.
Hans Withoos photography is set in a world simultaneously familiar and different. In Withoos exaggerated scenes, the figures crowding the images become archetypes, and the viewer is overcome by a sense of alienation. The work is full of layered, staged images with idiosyncratic aesthetics. Sometimes the photographs evoke emotions related to suffering, sensuality and hidden oppressiveness. At other times the images depict the complete opposite and are deliberately emotionless.

Hans Withoos
Hans Withoos: Photographic Painting Reimagined Limited Edition Fine Art Photography | Archival Pigment Prints Hans Withoos is a Dutch fine art photographer whose work occupies a compelling space between classical iconography and contemporary visual culture. Describing his practice as photographic painting, Withoos blends meticulously staged photography with painterly digital manipulation, producing limited edition archival pigment prints that are as technically refined as they are conceptually rich. A graduate of the Academy of Visual Arts in Tilburg, trained in both textile design and photography, Withoos draws on a wide spectrum of visual references, from classical antiquity and baroque opulence to the ornamental flourishes of art nouveau and the dream logic of surrealism. His signature style is instantly recognizable: hyper-saturated compositions, theatrical settings, and allegorical narratives rendered with exquisite detail. Withoos’s celebrated series Withoos meets Withoos is a singular dialogue across centuries, where the baroque still lifes and landscapes of his 17th-century ancestor Matthias Withoos are seamlessly integrated with fantastical contemporary imagery. This body of work exemplifies Withoos’s ability to fuse history and innovation, offering viewers a visual experience that is both grounded in tradition and strikingly modern. Over the course of a career spanning more than three decades, Hans Withoos has garnered international recognition, collaborating with cultural institutions such as Introdans and Stichting Orange Babies. His recent monograph, Photographic Paintings, consolidates his vibrant oeuvre, celebrating his contribution to the evolving field of fine art photography. Each work by Withoos is offered in a limited edition series, printed with museum-grade archival pigment processes, ensuring both longevity and exceptional color fidelity. His photographs invite sustained contemplation, luxurious, symbolic, and deeply layered, they resonate with collectors and curators alike.

To 17th century merchants, the nouveaux riches of the Dutch Golden Age, collecting luxury items and utensils to show off their wealth and lifestyle was a competition. They revelled in exotic animals and shells from the East Indies, priceless glassware from Venice, porcelain from China, silver and gold from Antwerp.
To immortalise their high standard of living they commissioned famous Dutch still life painters, including Pieter Claesz, Floris van Dijck, Frans Snyders...
