Culatto's new series 'Flora' features a selection of plant life that has been composed, frozen in water, and then photographed in the manner of a classical still life.
There is a conscious act of staging, which is clear from the composition, but there is also a complementary and serendipitous element to these portraits: Culatto restricted herself to only collecting vegetation she came across on walks, or in the day-to-day tasks of her life. As a consequence, each still life features plants that were found both near one another and in a specific part of the world, in this case South East England.
The conceptual argument underpinning the entire construction is the notion of beauty, the loss thereof, and the vain attempt to desperately hold on to it. 'Flora' is Culatto's way of understanding the value of youth, and its ultimate fate.
While the concept might address the traditional notions of fading beauty, the key, frozen component of 'Flora' speaks to a much more immediate idea; that of photography itself.
'Flora' was recently published as 'Flora: A Frozen English Garden' by Black Dog Press.

Born in the Canary Islands, visual artist Marisa Culatto now lives and works the UK. Culatto spent a decade working exclusively through digital photography, preoccupied with blurring the boundaries of photography into the language and practice usually associated with other mediums – mostly painting. Constraints, domesticity and daily rituals are at the centre of her practice. Culatto is interested in the concept of reality being a construct. Much of her work addresses such contradictions, misperceptions and/or a degree of visual ambiguity. She has even explored photography itself as subject.

About the artist:
Ugne Pouwell is a fine art photographer originally from Lithuania. Today she makes most of her creative work in London, United Kingdom.
Her main focus is black-and-white landscape and floral photography. Mainly using a large format 4x5 Linhof camera to express the timeless beauty of the subject in focus. Many of the influences come from 20th-century photography. She processes her work from start to finish: film processing, scanning and printing.
Her work is mainly printed on the world's oldest paper-producing houses Hahnemühle and Awagami and some more exclusive work on organic linen and cotton fabrics. Paper and canvas choices are mainly based on organic feeling also adding more special feeling to her work.
2016 Ugne finished her studies at the University of Westminster Photography and Digital Imaging Technologies. She continued her practice by applying scientific knowledge to her everyday work in fine art photography.
