Owen Kydd
Blue Studies

2013

About the Item

Immerse yourself in the chromatic depths of Owen Kydd's @owenkydd "Blue Studies" (2013), a single-channel video projection now presented at ADDITION. Initially exhibited at Monte Clark Gallery and featured in Artforum in the same year, this durational video piece navigates the space between static imagery and narrative. Through hypermediated elements like scratched surfaces, reflections, ambient headlights, and the shadows of unseen objects, Kydd constructs a mesmerizing visual experience. In "Blue Studies," Kydd transforms both quiet and dynamic scenes—palm trees fluttering under the sky, torn fabric, plastic bags, neon lights, and textured paint—into thoughtful studies of surface and the colour blue. The work highlights the nuances of light and weather, inviting us to slow down our perception and appreciate the subtle shifts in color and texture. This work exemplifies the exciting intersection of contemporary art and technology. Unlike traditional mediums, video art offers a dynamic and immersive experience, challenging viewers to engage with the work over time. "Blue Studies" is currently presented on a 50" monitor, but its potential expands far beyond this scale. Imagine these durational photographs on a 65" or 85" screen, further enveloping the viewer in its luminous world. With the market for video art on the rise, collectors have unique opportunities to be at the forefront of this developing art form. Kydd is prominently featured in Monochrome Mystique at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, engaging in dialogue with historic masterpieces. His works are included in the permanent collections of LACMA, MoMA, The Hammer Museum, SFMOMA, and the Vancouver Art Gallery, among many others.
