Shani Mootoo
Kavir's World 1/10 - still-life, interior, color, photography, giclée print

2019

About the Item

Known for her photographic portraits of interior spaces, Shani Mootoo reveals the curious and often emotive personal narratives of her subjects. This framed and matted giclee print from the "History Revisited" series is editioned, 1/10. Print size is 12 x 18 inches. It is also available in two larger sizes, 16 x 24 (framed 25 x 33 inches, edition of 8, $2,600); and 21 x 31.5 inches (30.5 x 40 inches framed, edition of 5, $3,400). Mootoo's images of interior rooms, furniture and trinkets constitute a form of portraiture, where the lines and wrinkles of the aging space resemble the aging of a person, their life story revealed on their skin. The original vision of the house has been transformed by time and by the usage and neglect of progressive generations. This is the home Mootoo returns to when she visits Trinidad, and like the family member who travels 'back home' to visit aged relatives, she has photographed the spaces therein to capture--perhaps for posterity, perhaps for the nostalgia of the one who left home and country--its history of the generations laid one on top of the other, each layer creating a pentimento of stories.  Shani Mootoo is an accomplished writer, filmmaker, painter and photographer who was longlisted for the Booker Man Prize and shortlisted in 2020 for the Giller Prize. She earned a BFA from the University of Western Ontario, and an MA in English from the University of Guelph.  In her artworks, Mootoo explores the idea of dislocation, identity, belonging: “…identity, like perspective, is inevitably shifting and multi-faceted.”Mootoo's paintings have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions locally and internationally, most notably at the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Queen’s Museum in NYC, the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, and at the Venice Biennale. Her videos include “English Lesson”, “Wild Woman in The Woods” and “Her Sweetness Lingers,” and have been screened in film and video festivals and art exhibitions locally and internationally, including at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. Shani Mootoo was born in Ireland and raised in Trinidad. She lives in Prince Edward County, Canada.

Known for her photographic portraits of interior spaces, Shani Mootoo reveals the curious and often emotive personal narratives of her subjects.  This giclee print by Shani Mootoo is editioned, 1/5. The work is matted, framed. Unframed size is 21 x 31.5 inches. It is also available in two other sizes, 12 x 28 (framed 21 x 27 inches, edition of 10, $2,000); and 16 x 24 inches (25 x 33 inches framed, edition of 8, $2,600.). Mootoo describes how this image was created: "I was at my printer's studio working on a body of photographs when we were interrupted by a customer who needed his attention for a few minutes. I agreed on a pause so that that customer could be accommodated, and my printer suggested I roam the garden, as there was a lot to see there. Just before the exit to the garden was a room crammed with pastel knick-knacks. A glass sliding door stood closed between me and this room, which seemed to be a combination of very special private space and a storage room. I immediately had the sense that I was seeing a photograph waiting to be taken and, as I had my Sony Rx100m7 camera around my neck, I ran back to my printer and asked if I could go into the room. He generously said, 'By all means, go wherever you'd like".  On entering, there wasn't much room to negotiate, but I was struck by the carefully...

He produced images over a 35 year career, and in recent years used archival techniques to produce his prints. For most of his career he worked as both a Commercial and Fine Art photographer, and during his last years concentrated on his personal imagery. Towards the end of his life journey, Ian was reviving with his partner two 19th century printing techniques in their studio, Platinum Palladium and Gum Bichromate ( one-of-a-kind pieces). This culminated in a large retrospective exhibition in Barcelona which was sponsored by the Nando and Elsa Peretti Foundation. The Platinum and Palladium prints are particularly interesting as they printed them onto vellum paper therefore transparent and bonded pure gold or silver to the back of the prints ( every print is therefore a unique and timeless piece of art). They have created rare and personalized pieces with an artisanal technique. Ian Sanderson was one of only a handful of artists worldwide producing this type of work. Nowadays, Ian’s partner continues their work, she’s still creating Platinum Palladium prints but also silver gelatin photographs.
