'Stabiles' original lithograph poster after Alexander Calder, Galerie Maeght

1971

About the Item

'Stabiles' is an original lithograph poster after Alexander Calder and published by Galerie Maeght in 1971. Calder had produced the stones for this lithograph a year earlier in 1970 for a print entitled 'Boomerangs,' which was signed in pencil and released in limited editions of 30 and of 150. This publication of the lithograph features the information for the exhibition, including the title in the upper left, "Galerie Maeght" in the lower left, as well as the copyright "Maeght Eiteur - Arte Paris" along the lower edge. 30.25 x 20.63 inches, sheet 35.13 x 26.5 inches, frame overall good and stable condition; some scattered light creasing to edges of sheet presented in a custom frame built to conservation standards including 100% rag mounting materials, UF5 Plexiglas to inhibit fading from UV rays, and housed in a modern profile silver-finish wood moulding Alexander Calder (1898-1976) originally studied mechanical engineering but became devoted to his art practice in 1923 after enrolling at the school of the Art Students' League in New York. In a few years, he became known for his wire sculptures and portraits. Later, he developed his iconic "mobile", which he described as 'four dimensional drawings'. In addition to these sculptures, though, Calder also continued to draw and make prints. He created this lithograph with his signature primary colors and geometric, abstract shapes.
