"A Lightness of Being" is a limited edition 0f 30 pigment prints of an oil painting on canvas by Amy Cheng. It is part of a Mandala series, a group of works that rely on a visual vocabulary such circles, spheres, transparency, layering, pattern, repetition, and ornamentation. Sumptuous, intricate, ornamented, these prints are richly referential — they call to mind a range of associations from mandalas, the cosmos, cells, lace, brocade and more. The artist feels aligned with the long history of geometric and floral ornamentation the Far Eastern, Middle Eastern, and European craftsmen have long employed. They did so with the implicit understanding that pattern and repetition, which are endemic in nature, are primal in their rhythmic connection to the human nervous system.
