Catherine Howe
Bouquet (peony, yellow, jade)

2019

About the Item

"Bouquet (peony, yellow, jade)" is a unique collagraph print from a series published by Manneken Press in 2019. In collagraph printmaking the artist adds to the plate to create the image rather than carving into it, as in relief printing, or etching into it, as in intaglio printing. Howe painted the image of a bouquet of flowers in a vase with sweeping, fluid brushstrokes strokes, directly onto the plate, using a thick gel medium. Carborundum grit was added to create the texture necessary to hold the ink. Different colors were used for each impression printed from the plate, creating a series of unique but related prints. Like all of Howe's works, her monotypes have a strong, vibrant, spontaneous energy and a sensuous sensibility. Referencing her personal garden located in the Hudson Valley, flowers dissolve into abstract flurries of brush marks and fields of commingled colors. The artist balances abstraction with representation in gestural prints which are process-based while retaining an affinity with the observed subject matter. Catherine Howe is widely admired for her painterly works that reference both the baroque and nature. Drawing from nature, Howe’s paintings is influenced by New York School abstraction, as well as rococo and 17th century Dutch still life paintings. Catherine Howe received an MFA from SUNY Buffalo in 1983. Her paintings have been exhibited extensively in New York, and the United States, including solo exhibitions at New York Academy of Art, Winston Wächter Fine Art , VonLintel Gallery, Lesley Heller Workspace, Casey Kaplan, Liz Koury, Littlejohn Contemporary, Bill Maynes Gallery, Slein/ SchmidtKim Light. Exhibitions abroad include Yukiko Kawase, Paris, Salama Caro Gallery, London, Johan Jonker, Amsterdam, and Thomas von Lintel. Howe is emeritus Professor at the New York Academy of Art. She lives and works in Manhattan and at her farmhouse in The Hudson Valley.

  • Old Glory
    By Judy Ledgerwood
    Located in Bloomington, IL
"Old Glory" is a unique monotype from a series of prints by Judy Ledgerwood published by Manneken Press in 2020. Rather than using ink, the artist painted directly on a sanded acrylic plate with watercolor paints. The impervious surface of the plate allowed the paint to flow, pool, settle and dry in ways that are distinct from painting in an unmediated manner on paper. When dry, the plate was printed onto damp Hahnemühle Copperplate paper; the moisture in the paper reactivated the watercolor paint and the pressure exerted by the press transferred the image, resulting in a one-of-a-kind monotype print. In "Old Glory" Ledgerwood alludes to the American flag in its rectangular format and red, white and blue color scheme. The artist's signature, title and date are verso, in pencil, and the Manneken Press blindstamp is impressed into the lower left corner of the print. Since the 1980’s Judy Ledgerwood has been exploring light, color, and space in paintings that combine the formal vocabulary of concrete abstraction with influences from pop culture to create vividly colored compositions. She combines decorative patterning, elements of textile design and other traditionally female crafts, with bold color and assertive brush strokes, traits associated with the historically male-dominated tradition of gestural abstraction. Often using stereotypically “feminine” elements, such as pastel colors and stylized floral patterns, Ledgerwood merges formalist and feminist concerns in works that are both sensual and subversive, with the ability to resonate beyond their initial impact. Judy Ledgerwood has received awards from The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts; and Illinois Art Council. Ledgerwood has also received an Artadia Award and a Tiffany Award...

  • Echolocation Three
    By Anna Kunz
    Located in Bloomington, IL
"Echolocation Three" is a monotype that Anna Kunz created during her visit to Manneken Press in November 2022. The prints in this series were made using oil based inks and paint sticks and hand-printed on Arches Cover paper. Anna Kunz continues to draw inspiration from the ocean; its hypnotic, cyclical movement and sense of mystery, which she has referred to as, “the most abstract space in nature.” This group of works is titled after the principle referred to as Echolocation, used by marine mammals as an extension of sight, to steer space and identify objects. In these works the artist has played with the idea of exchanging the animal behavior of using echoing sound as a means to navigate and locate, with vibrational hues as a way to compose, lead the viewer’s eye into unfamiliar relationships, and to materialize the unknown. Focusing on the elements of simple geometric forms and color, she imbues her compositions with energy through a process of intuitive call and response, suggesting a way for the viewer to enter and navigate the compositional spaces. The saturated colors in Kunz’ vocabulary are both opaque and transparent, choreographed in porous fields of the paper, and lead to symphonic compositional structures. While working on the "Echolocation” prints at Manneken press, the studio was filled with the ambient music of Brian Eno which created another kind of sonic inspiration for the echoing forms and colors found in the works. "Echolocation Three" is a unique monotype, 30" x 27"; a bleed print (the image extends to the edges of the paper). The front, lower right margin carries the artist's initials and date in pencil; the title is on the back. The Manneken Press blindstamp is impressed into the lower left margin. The print is sold unframed. Framing recommendations: float mounted on museum board or floated within an 8-ply window mat, in a quality, contemporary gallery frame. Anna Kunz lives and works in Chicago. Her work is represented by Alexander Berggruen New York; Mc Cormick Gallery, Chicago; and Galleri Urbane in Dallas. Her upcoming exhibition entitled "The Tide" can be seen at Berggruen San Francisco in February and March 2023. Kunz has been awarded numerous artist residencies, including the Golden Family Foundation Residency, Edward Albee Foundation Residency, the Space Program at Marie Sharpe Walsh Foundation and the Roger Brown Artist...
