1973

About the Item

Image dimensions: 5 x 6.5 cm. Grey Grammature is contemporary artwork realized by Elio Marchegiani and published in 1973 by La Nuova Foglio. Colored etching. Hand-signed in pencil on the lower right. Numbered in pencil on the lower left by the artist. Edition of 68/100. In good conditions. This contemporary print belongs to the series Grammature di colore realized by the artist during the 1970s. The artwork is composed of a white square shape inside which there is a small gray triangle at the bottom left. The "Grammature di colore" is an abstract geometric synthesis of the Italian fresco, which remains a constant research reference. A "Grammatura di colore" is currently on display in the Italian Contemporary Art Collection at the Farnesina (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rome); two Grammature of color (on plaster and on blackboard) are exhibited at the GNAM in Rome, in the hall of the '900, and again at the' Museo del 900 'and at the' Cantiere del '900' Gallerie d'Italia in Milan. Elio Marchegiani (Siracusa, 1929) He began to paint by himself, but it was the meeting with Mario Nigro, the knowledge and friendship with Gianni Bertini that suggested he leave the province for the artistic adventure in Paris, Milan, Rome, Bologna and in the summer the island of Favignana. In Florence he is part of "Gruppo 70", with a close friendship with Giuseppe Chiari. The attention to Giacomo Balla, Marcel Duchamp and Lucio Fontana and the links between science and image are the basis of his work. In 1968 he is at the Venice Biennale together with the reconstruction of futurist flowers and other works left unfinished by Balla or with the inscription: "Reconstruct them with the materials of your era". In 2001 the La Scala Theater Museum invited him with his reconstruction of "Feu d'artifice" by Giacomo Balla, reported at Castello di Rivoli, at MART in Rovereto and at Palazzo Reale in Milan in 2009 for the exhibition "Futurism 1909-2009 - speed + art + action ". After research on movement and light, the idea of "technology as poetry" leads him to an even more careful analysis of his work with works and settings, the series of tires, destined to die over time, also brought to the Biennale of Venice of 1972. Just before he had realized the Grammature of color, or a formal research on the supports (Intonaco, Lavagna, Pelle, Pergamena exhibited at the Studio Sant'Andrea in Milan).

Un Reve
By Louis Marcoussis
Located in New York, NY
Louis Marcoussis (1883-1941), Un Reve, etching, 1930, signed in pencil lower right and inscribed “2nd etat 1/2” lower left. Plate 1 of the portfolio Aurelia. Reference: Milet 55II, second state (of 4), before the edition (of 153 in the fourth state). In good condition, on a wove paper with full margins (a small area of discoloration below the border lower left, remains of prior glue right margin edge), 7 1/4 x 5 3/8, the sheet 15 5/8 x 9 3/8 inches, archival matting. A fine impression of a rare proof, before the edition. This is one of the two proofs of the second state. After this state the plate was reduced in a third state (from 183 to 174 mm), and then steel faced for the edition. Provenance: Libreria Prandi Reggio (blindstamp lower right corner) Jean Cassou and Pierre Courthion asked Marcoussis to illustrate Aurelia, a novel by Gerard de Merval. This was the first album of their collection “Le Blanc et Le Noir,” edition chez Fourcade. Marcoussis was familiar with this novel, in which imagination and reality intermingle. In it de Merval wrote: “La Reve est une seconde vie.” (The Dream is a parallel life.) Marcoussis wrote of the print: “Il ressemblait a l’Ange de la Melancholie d’Albrecht Durer.” (It recalls the angel in Durer’s Melancholia...
