"Light on Water" Original Color Lithograph signed on verso by Emmi Whitehorse

2001

About the Item

"Light on Water" is an original 13 color lithograph with pochoir from 4 aluminum plates and 1 mylar stencil. It was created by the artist Emmi Whitehorse and is signed on the back. It is from an edition of 120 and includes abstract lines and fields of color. 30" x 22 1/4" art 36 5/8" x 28 3/4" frame Emmi Whitehorse (born 1956) is a Native American painter and printmaker. She was born in Crownpoint, New Mexico and is a member of the Navajo Nation. She currently lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Whitehorse grew up on the open land northeast of Gallup, New Mexico in a family where only the Navajo Language was spoken. In 1980, Whitehorse earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in painting from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque (UNM). She earned her master's degree in art in 1982, also from UNM, majoring in printmaking and minoring in art history. Whitehorse's paintings draw upon a personal iconography, based on her reflections of her natural surroundings. She brings together Navajo cosmological perspectives with abstraction in her work. Whitehorse's work is deliberately apolitical. Her paintings are usually oil on paper, mounted on canvas, such as Movement, in the collection of the Honolulu Museum of Art. This work, from 1989, demonstrates the luxuriant, atmospheric, and meditative abstractions for which she is known. Her work is represented in public collections throughout North America, Europe, Japan, Uzbekistan and Morocco.

  • "Elizabeth Stein Gallery A/P, " Lithograph Exhibition Poster by Ilya Bolotowsky
    By Ilya Bolotowsky
    Located in Milwaukee, WI
"Elizabeth Stein Gallery A/P" is a color lithograph poster by Ilya Bolotowsky. This piece features an abstract and geometric design in yellow. 40" x 26" Born in Russia in 1907, Ilya Bolotowsky left his native country in his early childhood. The family was forced to emigrate as a result of his parent’s anti-Communist sentiments. They traveled first to Constantinople, then settled in New York City in 1923. Bolotowsky enrolled at the National Academy of Design in 1924. He tried out many styles in this period, ranging from the representational and classical to the abstract and expressionistic. In the early 1930s he became a designer of textiles. In 1932 Bolotowsky spent ten months in Europe. Although he was already familiar with prevailing modernist movements, the opportunity to study a wide range of these works and to meet some of the artists who had made them affected Bolotowsky profoundly. As a result of this trip, Bolotowsky began to synthesize aspects of Cubism with the abstract Surrealism of artists like Miro and Arp. These softer, floating forms gave way to a rectilinear geometry as he became more influenced by the Constructivists and Mondrian. Upon his return to the United States, Bolotowsky married his fellow painter Esphyr Slobodkina...
