Fernand Léger
Musée Cantini lithographic poster by Fernand Leger, 1966

1966

About the Item

This lithographic poster was printed in 1966 at the Atelier Mourlot in Paris to promote an exhibition of Leger's works at the Musée Cantini in Marseille in the summer of 1966. Leger understood the Cubist notion of freeing the painter from a responsibility to realism yet he was more interested in materialism than other Cubists, such as Braque and Picasso. He sought to express the noise, dynamism, and speed of new technology and machinery, working through several themes or cycles of imagery depicting humans in motion. Certificate of Provenance: Each individual work of art carefully curated by Mourlot Editions comes with a Certificate of Provenance, signed, dated, stamped, and numbered by Eric Mourlot. This certificate guarantees the origin and authenticity of your personal lithograph. About the Artist: (1881-1955) French Léger was a draftsman, illustrator, printmaker, stage designer, filmmaker, and ceramicist. In his early works, he created a personal form of Cubism, which he gradually modified into a more figurative, populist style. His bold simplified treatment of modern subject matter has caused him to be regarded as a forerunner of pop art. His mature work underwent many changes, from his Cubist-derived abstraction in the 1910s to distinctive realist imagery in the 1950s.

About the Artist: José Luis Cuevas is a Mexican artist who worked primarily with etchings, illustrations, sculptures, and paintings, though he is perhaps best known for his drawings. According to Cuevas, “perhaps because I was born in a paper mill and pencil factory, paper has always had a great fascination for me.” He briefly attended the eminent Mexican institution Escuela de Pintura, however Cuevas considers himself a self-taught draughtsman in search of an alternative to the Mexican Muralists and their social messages. For Cuevas, his drawings represent the isolation of man and an inability to communicate, many of his drawings featuring distorted human figures and figures transformed into animals. His work was inspired by the graphic styles of Francisco de Goya, Pablo Picasso, and José Guadalupe Posada...
