Jenny Holzer
Ceramic Chargers

2002

About the Item

Jenny Holzer's menacing (and sometimes humorous) "Truisms" first appeared in the late 1970s in a variety of forms, but initially oriented towards a type of street art. Over the past three decades Holzer has created an impressive oeuvre consisting of objects, sculpture and public art...often revisiting the slogans and sayings she first embraced in the early 1980's. Holzer has focused on perhaps a dozen of the original "Truisms" and revisted them in an array of media ranging from billboards to t-shirts, from marble benches to pencils. Holzer's text-based pieces have provoked the public to consider the power structures that surround us. In today's frightening political climate, any element of humor or mischief inherent in her work has been eclipsed by satire, cynicism and fear. This complementary set of beautifully glazed ceramic chargers boast two of Holzer's most famous slogans: "Money Creates Taste" "All Things Are Delicately Interconnected" This is a remarkable and affordable multiple by this inimitable artist. While seller focuses on Jenny Holzer multiples, this is the first time we've seen this piece offered on the secondary market. • Rites of Passage II
    By Robert Motherwell
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
Robert Motherwell (1915-1991), alongside Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Willem de Kooning, made up the quartet of American abstract painters that radically defined abstraction and established New York City as the center of the art world for the second half of the 20th century. Motherwell was also the unofficial spokesman of the New York School, writing, teaching and lecturing on behalf of the movement, his fellow artists, and the merits of abstraction. His work appears in museum collections around the world and is instantly recognizable for its boldness and black forms. Yet in addition to his impressive paintings, Motherwell is also revered as a printmaker. He is one of the most innovative and prolific printmakers of the 20th century. He was always searching for new techniques, whether at his own printmaking atelier, or collaborating with others, to expand his ideas and express his aesthetic. This print, along with "El General", was created at Tyler Graphics in 1979. "Rites of Passage II...
