About the Artist: Kim Tschang-Yeul (Korean, 1929–2021) is contemporary artist known for his painted depictions of water droplets. This motif stems from traditions of Eastern philosophy, acting both as a therapy for the artist’s traumatic memories and a meditation on eternity. “My water drop paintings are accomplished under the encounters of my life experiences and my plasticizing experiences,” he explained. “Each clear, impeccable water drop is in its initial state since purification, as if it is a recurrence of absolute nothingness; the water drop is also what it finally returns to.” Born on December 24, 1929 in Maengsan, Korea, he served in the military during the Korean War, his experiences of war continue to haunt the artist’s life and work. Kim studied at the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University before helping to found the Korean Art Informel movement in the mid-1950s, alongside Park Seo-Bo, Ha Chong-Hyun, and Chung Chang-Sup. Moving to New York in 1966, Kim attended the Art Students League for a few years before relocating to Paris. His exposure to international movements and schools of thought while abroad, led to his exploration of liquid forms, whose appearance straddles the boundary of abstraction and representation. In 2016, the Kim Tschang-Yeul Museum of Art opened in Jeju, South Korea, in honor of his life’s work. Kim lives and works between Seoul, South Korea and Paris, France. The artist’s works are held in the collections of the Albright-Knox Gallery in Buffalo, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., the Seoul Museum of Art, and the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, among others.

Printed by Brand X Editions, New York. Artwork size 40 x 30 inches. Custom framed as pictured. Frame size approx 46 x 36 inches. Artwork is in excellent condition. In his paintings, Wool contrasts bold stenciled text or abstract brushwork with white backgrounds. In the stenciled works, words run together and breaks arrive at the edges of the canvas, as seen in his Apocalypse Now (1988), which bears the phrase “SELL THE HOUSE SELL THE CAR SELL THE KIDS.” “With the painting the inspiration comes from the process of the work itself,” Wool reflected. “Like music [making the work] is an emotional experience. It’s a visual language and it’s almost impossible to put words to it.” Born on September 16, 1955 in Boston, MA, Wool studied briefly at Sarah Lawrence College, but quickly left to enroll at the New York Studio School. A contemporary of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julian Schnabel, Cindy Sherman, and others in New York’s downtown art scene in the 1980s, Wool introduced graffiti techniques to his work, later incorporating silkscreens and paint rollers. The artist’s work has been exhibited at numerous institutions around the world, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst am Museum Ludwig in Cologne, and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Wool currently lives and works between Marfa, TX and New York, NY with his wife the painter Charline von Heyl.

About the Artist: Victor Vasarely ((French/Hungarian, 1906–1997) was credited as the grandfather and leader of the Op Art movement. Utilizing geometric shapes and colorful graphics, the artist created compelling illusions of spatial depth, as seen in his work Vega-Nor (1969). Vasarely’s method of painting borrowed from a range of influences, including Bauhaus design principles, Wassily Kandinsky, and Constructivism. Born Győző Vásárhelyi on April 9, 1906 in Pécs, Hungary, he briefly studied medicine, but after two years he dedicated himself to learn academic painting. In the late 1920s, Vasarely enrolled at the Muhely Academy in Budapest, where the syllabus was largely based on Walter Gropius’s Bauhaus school in Germany. After settling in Paris in 1930, Vasarely worked in advertising agencies to support himself as a graphic artist while creating many works including Zebra (1937), which is considered by some to be one of the earliest examples of Op Art. The artist experimented in a style based in Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism during the 1940s, before arriving at his hallmark checkerboard paintings...

About the Artist: James Rosenquist (American, 1933–2017) was an artist known for his monumental paintings and prints. Often appropriating commercial imagery, his montage-like works combined popular culture, Surrealism, and historical painting methods. “Much of the aesthetic of my work comes from doing commercial art,” the artist once said. “I painted pieces of bread, Arrow shirts, movie stars. It was very interesting. Before I came to New York I wanted to paint the Sistine Chapel. I thought this is where the school of mural painting exists.” In his politically charged multi-panel painting F-111 (1964–1965), the artist offered a visual critique of the Vietnam War, with a medley of mushroom clouds, advertising, and populist imagery. Born on November 29, 1933 in Grand Forks, ND, Rosenquist went on to attend the University of Minnesota, before studying at the Art Students League in New York under George Grosz, Morris Kantor, and Edwin Dickinson...
