About the Item

Matilde Alessandra’s etching “D.M.” is part of her ongoing study of subtly dramatic series of non-objective monochromatic ink on paper works. Known for her minimalist light sculptures, Alessandra has elegantly translated the sophistication of her luminous three-dimensional works into a two-dimensional medium. With this etching, she explores the tension of light and dark, and between surface and receding depth using precise, repetitive cross-hatching to build texture and intensity. In “D.M.” fine line work creates a nebulous circle at the center, deepening toward inky black around the edges of the work. The paper size is 19.5 x 15.5 inches, and the print size is —- and is edition 1/40. Etching is an intaglio printmaking technique, dating to the 1500s. A metal plate (usually zinc or copper) is coated with a ground impervious to acid (such as wax) through which the artist draws, exposing the metal. The whole plate is immersed in acid until the lines are ‘bitten’ into the metal. The plate is then removed from the acid and inked for printing. Born in Venice, Italy, Alessandra studied at the Academy of Fine Arts (Venice, Italy). While she began her career in London working as interior and display designer, her artistic career took off in New York in the late 1990s. She started working with light, pairing fluorescent tubes with painted canvasses and plexiglas boxes. Since then she has built a reputation both as artist and designer, developing a distinctive and communicative style recognizable in all of her work. Her artistic output spans luminous sculptures, site specific installations and ink drawings. Her work has been exhibited across Europe and the United States. Notable recent exhibitions include the 55th Venice Biennale, and Leila Heller Gallery in New York City. She lives and works in New York City.
