Toby Topek
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Toby Topek grew up in Houston. She has studied archaeology, art, architecture, the environment, culture and history in Mexico, the Mediterranean, North Africa, Near East, Adriatic, Brazil and Canada. Topek lived and worked in Greece and Turkey part-time, 1984–88. Her work has been exhibited at the Whitney Bank Museum Branch-Houston, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Art Museum of South Texas at Corpus Christi, Galveston Arts Center, the International Sculpture Conference at Houston, College of the Mainland, Lawndale Art Center, Diverseworks, Women & Their Work at Austin, Transco Gallery and Project Row Houses. In 2000, Topek completed eleven ten-foot marble mosaic medallion paving inlays for a Public Art Commission from the City of Houston on a six-block area of Texas Avenue in Downtown Houston. Public art commissions: Metro Solutions, Art in Transit, Scott Street Station, University Corridor. Topek is currently Vice President of the Artist Rescue Mission, and in the past was involved in the Houston Women’s Caucus for Art, the Cultural Arts Council of Houston/ Harris County, and the Holocaust Education Center. In 1990, Topek was an Iris Siff Women of Achievement Honoree for the Houston Oral History Project.

Fluhr was born in New York City in 1955 and moved to Texas to work as an artist. Beginning with ceramics at age 15 and showing at Ola Podrida Gallery in Dallas, he moved on to the University of Texas at Austin. Fluhr received his BFA from the University of Houston followed by an MFA in printmaking at the prestigious Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where he graduated magna cum laude. He traveled extensively, painting life along the way in watercolor, oil or acrylic, usually on recycled materials, such as paper bags, pamphlets, and receipts. Fluhr exhibited in six galleries in the United States and several galleries in Mexico, where he also maintained a studio in the late 1980s.
