Zevs
ZEVS 'Liquidated Louis Vuitton'

2017

About the Item

Zevs Liquidated LV, 2017 Screnprint 58" x 46 " Edition of 20 signed and numbered in pencil Zevs is an anonymous contemporary French graffiti artist best known for his Liquidation series, in which he drips paint from recognizable Western logos to transform them from the known to the unstable. Some of the famous logos that have been subjected to this process include Chanel, McDonalds, Giorgio Armani, Louis Vuitton, Coca Cola, and Apple. Born in France in 1977, Zevs was an early member of the burgeoning graffiti scene, gaining notoriety from his street art and tagging in the 1990s. Like the Liquidation pieces, the majority of his work attacks commercialism. “I consider artistic expression to be an opposing force based on power of itself,” he has said. “I reverse the power to change the flow at my advantage.” The first major survey of Zevs’ work was held in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, and he has since participated in exhibitions and performances worldwide, including the 2010 Moscow Biennial. He has exhibited regularly with De Buck Gallery in New York, and currently lives and works between Paris, France and Berlin, Germany.

Although the exact location is unclear, both agree that it would have been at either Fashion Moda or the Writers’ Bench at 149th Street and Grand Concourse. Founded by Stefan Eins in 1978, Fashion Moda began as a “cultural concept” whose principles revolved around the fact that art can be made by anyone, anywhere and art should be accessible to anyone, anywhere. Located in the South Bronx, Fashion Moda embraced new talent and encouraged creative production across all mediums. The gallery has been credited as a major force behind the recognition of graffiti writing as an art form and it played a pivotal role in a community where Hip Hop was rapidly emerging. CRASH was only 19 years old when he curated “Graffiti Art Success for America” at Fashion Moda and his varied experiences at the gallery would later inspire his founding of WALLWORKS.
