About the Item
Ademola Olugbefola was an original member of the Weusi Collective and became the first educational director of the Weusi Academy of African Arts and Studies in 1969.
Mr. Olugebefola is an African American artist born in 1941 and currently working in New York City.
Mr. Olugebefola states with respect to the current work:
I have done several works over the years with "Family" titles, but I believe the print you referenced was a commissioned (circa mid 1970's) signed and numbered limited edition color serigraph printed in Italy by the late publisher of Tuesday Magazine, a culturally themed quarterly. TM also served as a supplement to several national newspapers.
However, I modeled the serigraph image after my original 1969 oil painting Black Family (later renamed "The Family").
The original canvas is in the permanent collection of the Studio Museum in Harlem.
Ademola
Notwithstanding the foregoing, I believe that only 100 impressions of the print were actually printed as only a handful have surfaced since it was printed in 1971.
