About the Item

Original WW1 poster: A Wonderful Opportunity for You. Ashore, on leave. United States Navy. A pre-war recruiting lithographic poster features an ebullient sailor going home on leave. Full lithograph that had the brightness of a serigraph. Rawls 71. Artist: Charles E Ruttan. The image has a sailor striding briskly with his duffle and suitcase; ships and palm trees in the background. Linen-backed in very good condition, bright and vibrant colors. A great gift for anyone who served in the U. S. Navy. From the artist: After the war, Ruttan illustrated a series of paintings that depicted the first successful crossing of the Atlantic by a flight of Navy Curtiss NC seaplanes. In 1917, Ruttan's World War I poster for the U.S. Navy was released. It featured a man in uniform walking with suitcases in his hands. Behind him is a ship surrounded by yellow and orange light. The poster reads: "A wonderful opportunity for YOU. United States Navy." The message conveyed was that by joining military service, young men were able to travel the world and gain experiences they wouldn't have had before. This is an Original Lithograph Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction.
