This original World War II poster, titled "My Girl’s a WOW", is a compelling piece of home front propaganda created in 1943 by American artist Adolph Treidler (1886–1981). Commissioned by the U.S. Army Ordnance Department, the poster honors and promotes the efforts of Women Ordnance Workers (WOWs)—the women who took on essential roles in the manufacturing of arms, ammunition, and military equipment during the war.
In this image, a uniformed soldier proudly holds up a photograph of his sweetheart, who wears the signature polka-dot headscarf of a WOW. The poster’s slogan, "My Girl’s a WOW," plays on both the acronym and the cultural admiration for women stepping into traditionally male roles with confidence and competence. It served not only to promote the program but to bolster morale and national pride by personalizing the contributions of women to the war effort.
Adolph Treidler was one of the leading American illustrators of the early 20th century. Born in Westcliff, Colorado in 1886 and active through the mid-century, Treidler gained recognition for his advertising work for brands like Pierce-Arrow automobiles and the Bermuda Board of Tourism. During both World Wars, he contributed his talents to the U.S. government, creating persuasive recruitment and morale posters. Treidler’s wartime work is noted for its clarity, directness, and emotional appeal—often highlighting the unity between those on the front lines and those supporting from home.
