Basquiat Paintings 1981-1984 Fruitmarket Gallery Exhibition Catalog 1984

1984

About the Item

Jean-Michel Basquiat Paintings 1981-1984: Rare highly sought-after Basquiat exhibition catalog from 1984 published by The Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh, Scotland. Entitled: "Jean-Michel Basquiat: Paintings, 1981-1984" marked Basquiat's first solo museum exhibition & UK debut. The front and back covers feature original designs by Basquiat with two quotations inscribed on the back. The text and the image, according to Basquiat, was meant to be viewed as a singular composition. This major exhibition, which was organized by Mark Francis, traveled from to the Institute of Contemporary Art in London (1985) and the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam (1985). A rare historical 1980s Basquiat collectible that seldom comes to market. 1984 exhibition catalog; softcover, 9 x 1 2 inches. Minor surface wear to cover; otherwise very good overall vintage condition. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Scarce. Well-suited for display or framing. Jean-Michel Basquiat’s dramatic life and iconic paintings—which variously feature obsessive scribbling, enigmatic symbols and diagrams, and iconography including skulls, masks, and the artist’s trademark crown—make him one of the most famous artists of the 20th century. The self-taught painter embraced graffiti before committing to a studio practice. He found a mentor and friend in Andy Warhol, who helped the young artist navigate the 1980s New York art world. Across his oeuvre, Basquiat drew on his own Caribbean heritage; a convergence of African American, African, and Aztec cultural histories; classical themes; and pop cultural figures including athletes and musicians. The immediacy and intellectual depth of his paintings won him widespread acclaim both before and after his untimely death at the age of 27. Basquiat’s paintings now belong in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others. In 2017, Basquiat’s Untitled (1982) notched $110.5 million at auction and became the most expensive artwork by an American artist to ever be sold.

A beautifully designed publication I Lay Here For You, sumptuously illustrated and with a fascinating essay by Katy Hessell, author of The History of Art without Men. About the project: Tracey Emin’s first Scottish show since 2008, I Lay Here For You (28 May – 2 October) will offer an intimate encounter with love and hope set against the domestic architecture and informal woodland of Jupiter Artland. Imbued with connotations of both warmth and vulnerability, resonating with Tracey Emin’s belief of the ‘personal as political’ the exhibition will feature brand new work by the artist reflecting on the possibility of love after hardship. Tracey Emin’s participation in Jupiter Artland’s 2022 season begins with the unveiling I Lay Here For You, a six metre bronze sited personally by the artist in an old-growth beech grove. Larger than life, powerful and at ease, the sculpture presents a radically different view of woman’s place...

Dennis Hopper Photographs 1961-1967 Limited Edition Hand Signed Monograph in box
By Dennis Hopper
Located in New York, NY
Dennis Hopper Photographs 1961 - 1967 (Limited Edition Hand Signed), 2009 Hardcover Book in Clamshell Box. Hand Signed and numbered 1327/1500 Hand signed by Dennis Hopper on the colophon page. 19 × 14 1/4 × 3 1/10 inches This is the limited edition (signed and numbered) collector's edition, not to be confused with the later mass market edition. Hand signed, hardcover book in a clamshell box from an edition of 1500. 17.3 x 13 inches (book) 19 x 14 1/4 inches (box) 546 pages Accompanied by Certificate of Guarantee issued by Alpha 137 Gallery During the 1960s, Dennis Hopper (1936–2010) carried a camera everywhere—on film sets and locations, at parties, in diners, bars and galleries, driving on freeways, and walking in political marches. He photographed movie idols, pop stars, writers, artists, girlfriends, and complete strangers. Along the way he captured some of the most intriguing moments of his generation with a keen and intuitive eye. From a selection of photographs compiled by Hopper and gallerist Tony Shafrazi—more than a third of them previously unpublished—this Collector’s Edition distills the essence of Hopper’s prodigious photographic career, documenting the likes of Tina Turner in the studio, Andy Warhol at his first West Coast show, Paul Newman on set, and Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights March from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. In many ways this work is photography as film, a poignant narrative expressed through a series of stark images—early shots of Tijuana bullfights, LA happenings, and urban street scenes show an experimental freedom that would translate into the vivid cinematic imagery of Easy Rider and beyond. The images are accompanied by introductory essays from Tony Shafrazi and legendary West Coast art pioneer Walter Hopps, as well as an extensive biography by journalist Jessica Hundley. With excerpts from Victor Bockris’s interviews of Hopper’s famous subjects, friends, and family, this is an unprecedented exploration of the life and mind of one of America’s most fascinating personalities. CONTRIBUTORS The photographer Dennis Hopper (1936–2010) was an acclaimed artist, actor, screenwriter, and director who first impressed audiences with his performances in Rebel Without A Cause (1955) and Giant (1956). He changed the face of American cinema with Easy Rider (1969), which he cowrote, directed, and starred in. Hopper went on to act in hundreds of memorable films and television shows, including Apocalypse Now (1979), Blue Velvet (1986), Hoosiers (1986), True Romance (1993), Basquiat (1997), Elegy (2008), and the TV series Crash (2008). Hopper began painting as a child and started taking photos in 1961, after his then wife Brooke Hayward...
