Keith Haring Amsterdam 1986:
"When Keith Haring’s first major solo exhibition was staged in Stedelijk Museum in 1986, the artist was beginning to gain great affection and admiration within the larger audience. Alongside his iconic paintings and drawings, Haring wanted to create a site-specific work especially devised for this show. Therefore, he had laid out a massive velum on the floor, measuring almost 40 x 66 feet, 12 x 20 meters, and created a stunning canvas in just one day, using only spray paint. Painting rapidly and rhythmically while moving over the canvas to the hip-hop playing in the background, Haring made quite a performance of it, while photographers and journalists looked on. Featuring dancing, waving figures, crawling babies and squirming animals, the canvas was stretched below the monumental glass cupola above the historic staircase, filtering daylight into the grand hallway.
At the time of the show, Keith Haring was involved in many other activities in the city of Amsterdam, outside of the museum. Using the city as his canvas, he joined young, local, graffiti artists to create some stunning artworks that commanded attention. Among those pieces is a mural on the façade of the former Stedelijk storage depot on the Jan van Galenstraat, painted while working from a crane. Described by the Amsterdam artist Jan Rothuizen, who was there at the time, as a kind of a happy dinosaur with an elongated neck, it is Haring’s largest surviving public artwork in Europe. This painting still stands today, yet it is hidden from the view, concealed by weatherboarding installed to protect the building against damp conditions." (source: Widewalls 10/17)

Keith Haring Pop Shop:
In 1986, Keith Haring opened the Pop Shop at 292 Lafayette Street, New York. The following year, Haring collaborated with Japanese film producer Kaz Kuzui, and his American wife, film director Fran Rubel Kuzui on a Tokyo venue, in the Aoyama neighborhood.
The shop was made out of two shipping containers welded together to form one large room. While the shop was conceived very much in the image of its New York counterpart, many of the products were created by Haring to mirror Japan’s cultural traditions. Haring did extensive design work in Tokyo; fans and kimonos were manufactured in Kyoto, and rice bowl templates were painted and then produced in Nagoya. With speed and virtuosity, Haring began painting the interior of the shop on January 27, 1988 and finished the next day. The paint was still tacky on January 29 when he oversaw the installation of the displays in time for a press preview that evening. On Saturday, January 30, Pop Shop Tokyo opened to the public. However, sales were disappointing, and Haring noted “there are just too many Haring fakes available all over Tokyo and, this time, they’re really well done.” The shop closed in the summer of 1988. MoMa, The Eileen and Michael Cohen Collection
Raymond Pettibon emerged from Southern California DIY culture and its punk-rock sensibility, and his work still embraces a youthful edginess and sense of political engagement. Drawing from disparate cultural sources—which range from Marcel Proust and William Blake to the Bible—the artist makes cartoon-inspired ink drawings on paper which evoke the aesthetics of fanzines and concert flyers. Baseball players, trains, crashing waves, political figures, and comic book characters make frequent appearances, often accompanied by cryptic, ironic snippets of handwritten text. Pettibon has been the subject of solo shows at the New Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and the Kunsthalle Wien. He has exhibited at the Venice Biennale, Documenta, and the Whitney Biennial, where he was the recipient of the Bucksbaum Award in 2004. On the secondary market, Pettibon’s work has sold for over $1 million. Alongside his fine-art practice, Pettibon has illustrated album art for Sonic Youth and Black Flag, among other musical acts.

About the artist:
Julian Schnabel is a painter and filmmaker known as an integral member of the American Neo-Expressionists along with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Eric Fischl. Schnabel’s application of paint on massive canvases, use of unconventional materials such as broken plates, and representation of human figure(s) are hallmarks of his most famous works. “My paintings take up room, they make a stand. People will always react to that,” he said of his work. “Some people get inspired, others get offended. But, that's good. I like that.” Born on October 26, 1951 in Brooklyn, NY, Schnabel participated in the Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York in the late 1970s, after his public persona grew. The artist turned to feature-filmmaking in the 1990s with his film Basquiat (1996), an intimate fictionalized account of the life of his late friend. Schnabel went on to win the Grand Jury Prize for Before Night Falls (2000) at the Venice Film Festival and the Best Director Prize at the Cannes Film Festival for The Diving Bell...
