Tyler Tyler Graphics: Catalogue Raisonné, 1974-1985, New York: Abbeville Press, 1987. p. 289. Alan Shields came of age artistically in the late 1960s in New York. Expanding the boundaries of Minimalism, he became known as a master of aesthetic invention through his wide-ranging exploration of materials and techniques. His mixed media works often contain combinations of traditional silkscreen processes combined with found materials. New York Times critic Roberta Smith wrote in her 2005 obituary for the artist: "Mr. Shields's work combined expanses of gorgeous stained color, reminiscent of Helen Frankenthaler's canvases, with the humbler crafts and a Gypsy sense of portability." Critic Robert Hughes has described Shields as a brilliant bricoleur who could, and often did, make art out of just about anything. He became an innovative printmaker, experimenting with handmade paper and turning out editions in which each print was unique. After his passing, Shields was awarded a Judith Rothschild Foundation grant given to recently deceased abstract artists whose work is of the highest quality but merits further recognition. About Alan Shields: Alan Shields (b. 1944, Herington, KS; d. 2005, Shelter Island, NY) created unique, imaginative, and theatrical structures using unconventional materials and vibrant color. His three-dimensional paintings convey a playful, deconstructive impulse through the incorporation of un-stretched hand-dyed canvas, rope, yarn, beads, and wood. Shields moved to New York City in 1968, where he showed with Paula Cooper...

Guifà e la Beretta Rossa, (Guifà and the Red Cap)
By Frank Stella
Located in Palo Alto, CA
Frank Stella’s Guifà e la Beretta Rossa, (Guifà and the Red Cap), 1989, is a captivating etching made of bold colors and large-scale geometric forms. This artwork was made in collaboration with well-known print maker Kenneth Tyler. In the upper left of the image, rainbow hues of violet, blue, green and yellow decorate the paper. These colors contrast beautifully against the bold, inky strokes which color the background. Additionally, columns, pillars and cones are layered on top of one another as if in a collage. The shapes vary from perfect circles to abstract forms. Viewed in combination, the imagery dances before the viewer, inviting the imagination to construct its own interpretations. This series of mechanical shapes and 3-D composition are reminiscent of Stella’s relief paintings from the early 1980s. For an artist like Stella, experimenting with color, form and dimension is key. He proves to viewers he cannot be confined to a specific artistic genre or movement. Therefore, Stella's abstract works retain a timelessness which will transcend expectations of abstract art. Above all, this large-scale work is an exceptional example of Stella’s later period and his iconic artistic style. The artist is a master of both painting and print. Oftentimes, Stella’s prints...

THORNTON. The Roses

Magnificent print by Robert John Thornton. Aquatint and mezzotint, printed in colour and finished by hand, heightened with gum arabic, from The Temple of Flora. [London 1799] First state. Thornton was a prolific medical author and Doctor of Medicine, practicing at St Andrews University and licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians. In 1797, he also began advertising for subscribers to his planned natural history publishing venture, which eventually comprised of 30 folio botanical plates. For these remarkable illustrations, he engaged the services of the leading artists and engravers of his day: Sir William Beechey, James Opie, Henry Raeburn, John Russell, Philip Reinagle and others as painters; Francesco Bartolozzi, Richard Earlom and John Landseer. Most of the images were painted by Peter Charles Henderson and Philip Reinagle. These botanical illustrations are unique as they were the first flower prints with landscape backgrounds, depicting the natural habitat of the plant. The life-size flowers stand out dramatically and the whole effect is startlingly modern. Thornton's announced intention was to make this work the most magnificent tribute ever paid to the famous Swedish botanist Linnaeus by illustrating his Sexual System with the finest possible prints. All these were engraved on a larger scale than anything which had hitherto appeared and then were printed in colour, an expensive and uncommon method in England at this time. A brilliant effect. This rare and celebrated plate of the Roses...
