Ángel Ricardo Ricardo Ríos
Angel Ricardo Rios was born in Cuba in 1965 where he graduated from the Higher Institute of Art in Havana. Ricardo’s work has an eagerness to it, a blur of boundaries within the space that it occupies. The mixing and intertwining of subjects give way to explosions of color, texture, and shape, some of which are painted directly with his hands. To understand Ricardo’s work one must acknowledge two essential elements. The first is a playful, joyful, and intimate expression that has an intense, frenzied, sexual nature, and the second is a refusal to be confined by the edges of the canvas. Often it appears as if his compositions want to break free. Ricardo has exhibited individually since 1981 in multiple institutions including Chapo University Museum, Popular Art Museum in Mexico City, Galeria Luis Sandoval Contemporary Art in Mexico City, and Fernando Pradilla Gallery in Madrid. He has exhibited collectively in Zona Maco in Mexico City, Art Miami, and the Biennial of Havana in Cuba. Ricardo has received a number of awards and mentions including Honorable Mention in the fourth Biennial of Visual Arts Yucatan Mexico as well as multiple publications including Art Magazine Spain and Art Nexus.

Signed on the deck 31 × 1 × 3/10 inches Edition 126/150 Signed on the deck. Hand numbered from the edition of 150 Highly desirable and sought after limited edition; long sold out worldwide. The text reads: "THE WORLD IS NOT CHANGING IF YOU DON'T SHOULDER THE BURDEN OF RESPONSIBILITY." This skateboard was inspired by the artist’s installation ‘He Xie’, a group of 3,200 ceramic crabs installed at Washington D.C.’s Hirshhorn Museum in 2011. "Crabs" refers to a slang word used for internet censorship in China. It plays on the similar sounding between ‘river crab’ and ‘harmonious’. “I think there is a responsibility for any artist to protect freedom of expression.” – Ai Weiwei “Without freedom of speech there is no modern world, just a barbaric one."― Ai Weiwei This photo is part of ‘Study in Perspective’ where Ai Weiwei openly attacks the regime in place by de-sacralizing one of the country’s most iconic and controversial sites: Tiananmen square...Category
