Keith Haring Club DV8 San Francisco 1991:
A rare 1991 Club DV8's poster featuring Keith Haring balloon dog artwork originally created by the artist for DV8 in the mid 1980s. After befriending the owner of DV8, Haring was asked to create a custom mural to hang behind the bar of this seminal San Francisco gay club - often credited for establishing house music in San Francisco. Haring frequented the club and in the mid late 1980s DV8 featured a ‘Keith Haring room’. Features a Keith Haring (1985) printed signature on the lower right and a highly decorative color palette.

"Haring’s work has long been a part of San Francisco’s ocular culture. He created works for diverse venues in San Francisco during his lifetime, including murals for DV8, a club once located in the South of Market neighborhood, and a huge, multi-panel painting for the South of Market Child-care Center (also known as the Saint Patrick’s Daycare Center). Haring’s outdoor sculpture Untitled (Three Dancing Figures 1989), located at Third and Howard Streets, is a prominent feature of Moscone Convention Center, and his triptych altarpiece The Life of Christ (1990) is installed in the AIDS Chapel at Grace Cathedral." Keith Haring rose to prominence in 1980s New York within the East Village art scene alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kenny Scharf, and Jenny Holzer. He bridged the gap between the art world and the street, graffiting city subways and sidewalks before committing to a studio practice. Haring united the appeal of cartoons with the raw energy of Art Brut artists such as Jean DuBuffet as he developed a distinct pop-graffiti aesthetic that comprised energetic, boldly outlined figures against solid or patterned backdrops. His major themes included exploitation, subjugation, drug abuse, and the threat of nuclear holocaust; Haring boldly engaged with social issues, especially after receiving an AIDS diagnosis in 1987. Today, his work sells for seven figures at auction and has been the subject of solo shows at the Brooklyn Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Albertina Museum in Vienna, among other institutions.
