About the Item
An original chromolithograph from the Celebrated Dogs of America by Alexander Pope Jr. and published by S.E. Casino, Boston,1882. This composition features six Jack Russell Terriers all with collars on in a park-like setting. Good condition and color except for two very small tears on bottom. Also minus margins of original mount.
Alexander Pope Jr. ( 1849-1924 ) was an American sporting artist best known for his animal and still life paintings. Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, a self taught painter Pope also studied sculpture with the artist William Copley. Pope continued creating sculptures through the 1880s and later became a member of the elite Copley Society of Boston. He published two important portfolios of chromolithographs after his watercolors: “Celebrated Dogs of America” (1882) from which this plate comes and “Upland Game Birds and Water Fowl of the United States” (1878).
