This limited edition linocut was inspired by a steep lane up to Coleton Fishacre National Trust house and gardens in Devon. I loved the windy road and the trees right at the top. A reduction lino cut is a method of relief printing in which each colour layer is taken from the same block (lino), meaning that an entire edition must be printed in one go as once the lino has been carved into for the next layer, you can't go back to print more.
Artist bio: Ann Burnham works from her garden studio, where she also runs regular workshops and classes in printmaking. Anns work is inspired by a fascination with the textures and patterns found in both the natural and man-made landscape around us. She is drawn to the beauty of the rolling shropshire countryside and the narrow hedgrow lanes, “I love that sense of mystery about where things may lead and where they may have originated” She enjoys the direct and rich mark making of the collagraph and monoprint processes, as well as the more precise methods of reduction lino-cut and etching, which probably reflect her graphics background. Ann Burnham trained at Harrow School of Art and worked as a graphic designer for some years before becoming a full time printmaker. She exhibits regularly and has work in private collections in this country and abroad, and permanently on display at Greenwich Printmakers Gallery and Southbank Printmakers Gallery. She has exhibited at Bankside RE open, Society of Woman Artists at the Mall Galleries, Affordable Art Fair Battersea and Hampstead, as well as being prizewinner in the ‘Inspired by’ competition at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

This piece is inspired by William Blake's poem 'TheTyger'. I design the image in my sketchbook and then transfer it to lino, which I hand-carve. Each print is handprinted in my studio using a roller press. As each print is individually handprinted, there may be slight variations in tone and colour. This print is made using gold oil-based ink as a background and then printed over with the tiger in dark purple ink. Each print has the title, edition number and my signature hand-written beneath the image.

At school I spent most of my time in the art department. I then went on to do a one year foundation course at Carlisle College of Art. It was here that I learnt the art of printmaking and then continued my studies at the Norwich School of Art doing a degree in graphic design. Keen to move to London I found my first job as a graphic designer with John Nash and Friends and my second with Michael Peters and Partners. I went on to win a D&AD (Design and Art Directors Club of Great Britain) silver award for the very first greeting stamps issued by the Royal Mail.
