Charles Pachter
One of Canada’s leading contemporary artists, Charles Pachter is a painter, printmaker, sculptor, designer, historian, and lecturer. His work is pursued by significant private and public collections.
Born in Toronto, Pachter studied art history at the University of Toronto, French literature at the Sorbonne and painting and graphics at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. His work has been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum, and the McMichael Gallery. Pachter is represented in public and private collections throughout Canada, and internationally. He has held solo exhibitions in France, Germany, Japan, the UK, and India.
Pachter worked at Expo 67 in Montreal supervising the installation of 60 contemporary sculptures from around the world. He taught printmaking at the University of Calgary in 1969–70. He spearheaded Toronto’s Queen Street West revival in the 1970s and ‘80s by restoring 20 old buildings into facilities for arts usage.
Pachter is an Officer of the Order of Canada, a Chevalier of France’s Order of Arts and Letters, a member of the Order of Ontario and holds honorary doctorates from Brock University, OCAD University and the University of Toronto, where he is a Senior Fellow at Massey College. He is a recipient of the Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals. While often referred to as “Canada's Warhol,” he has his own unique voice.
Pachter’s paintings are in the Portrait Gallery of Canada, the Canadian Embassy in Washington, Canada House in London, the Parliament Buildings, the Prime Minister’s residence, the Governor General's home and the Embassy of France in Ottawa.

- Bay WatchBy Charles PachterLocated in Toronto, OntarioCharles Pachter is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. His iconic, uplifting and patriotic images have independently earned their place in the nation's museums. For the uninitiated, his work is accessible and beloved (notably his amazing hockey mural at Toronto's College Street subway station). While Pachter’s work shares some characteristics with Jim Dine, David Hockney and even Andy Warhol, his style is resoundingly charming, singular and uniquely Canadian. - Papillion -Limited Edition Giclée print on Archival Cotton Paper, Abstract, 2018Located in Bal Harbour, FLPapillion, 2018 Giclée print on Archival Cotton Paper. Acid and Lignin-free. The painting is a limited edition Giclée print, created using high-quality archival cotton paper, ensuring its longevity and preserving the intricate details of the artwork. The central image of the composition features a butterfly, but instead of traditional organic patterns, it is formed by a captivating arrangement of geometric figures. The butterfly serves as the focal point of the painting, capturing the viewer's attention with its bold and vibrant colors. Shades of fuchsia, blue, orange, green, white, black, yellow, and light blue interplay harmoniously, creating a visually striking and energetic composition. Upon closer inspection, one can discern that the butterfly's wings are constructed using a meticulous arrangement of various geometric shapes. As the viewer's gaze explores the painting, they may notice that within the composition, there are additional elements arranged in the form of eyes. These eyes, composed of circles of varying sizes and triangles, lend an intriguing depth and surreal quality to the artwork. They evoke a sense of introspection and invite contemplation about the interplay of perception and reality. Papillion, 2018 Giclée print on Archival Cotton Paper. "The horse plays a prominent role in Chetkov’s oeuvre, symbolizing youth, freedom and the flight of time, always conveying a sense of energy and animation. He related closely with Kandinsky who famously noted, “Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammers, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another purposely, to cause vibrations to the soul."
