Dirk Stoop (c.1615–1686) was a widely travelled painter of the Dutch Golden Age. Alternative versions of his name include Dirck Stoff, Theodorus (van der) Stoop, Thierry (the French version) and Rod(e)rigo, by which he was known in Portugal. Stoop was born in Utrecht. His father was the glass painter Willem Jansz. van Stoop and his brother Maerten was also a painter, especially of war scenes. According to Houbraken, his father had also been the first teacher of Abraham Diepraam. Houbraken considered the elder Stoop to be a good horse painter. This younger Stoop was known for Italianate landscapes with hunting parties, views of ports, cavalry scenes, history paintings, still lifes and altar pieces, which were valued highly in his time. He was also an engraver and among his productions during a stay in England in the 1650s were some of the plates for the second, luxury edition of John Ogilby’s Aesop’s Fables in 1665, and a series of prints of “12 horses”. In 1638, Stoop was a pupil in the Utrecht guild. He then went to live in Italy, probably between 1639 and 1645. During a subsequent visit to England he painted the panoramic Restoration procession of King Charles II (1660). Dirk then went on to Lisbon and became Court painter to the Princess Catherine of Braganza. Rodrigo, as he was known locally, did many works for the Portuguese court in its entirety, from various portraits to the famed depiction of Ribeira Palace. When Cathrine was betrothed to Charles II, he joined her entourage when she came to England in 1662. From this time dates the series of eight large plates portraying her progress from Portsmouth to Hampton Court. After a four year stay, he returned to Utrecht but was known to have travelled to Hamburg some time between that date and his death. He returned to Holland and died in Utrecht in 1686.

- Shepherdess with Sheep and GoatBy Francesco LondonioLocated in Saint Augustine, FLAn original engraving on soft blue wove handmade paper by Italian artist Francesco Londonio (1723-1783) titled "Shepherdess with Sheep and Goat", 1759. Signed and dated by Londonio in the plate upper right, (printed signature). Edition size unknown, presumed small. "10" printed upper right in margin, likely the plate number. "Sammlung Hämmer (Hammer Collection)" stamp in green on verso. The work is presently archivally tipped into a storage mat. Sheet size: 7.25" x 5.5". Image size: 6.75" x 5.25". Some light foxing spots associated with age. Minor crease in paper across sheep's head - likely original from handmade paper process. It is otherwise a strong impression in very good condition. Very rare. Francesco Londonio (Milan, 1723 – Milan, 1783) was an Italian painter, engraver, and scenographer, active mainly in Milan in a late-Baroque or Rococo style. Londonio trained as a painter under Ferdinando Porta and Giovanni Battista Sassi in Milan, but traveled to Rome and Naples. He studied engraving with Benigno Bossi. He is best known for his paintings and ectchings of rustic and pastoral landscapes and subjects, with both animals and peasants playing a dominating role over the landscape. This focus on genre themes was popular among the wealthy patrons of the time, specially in Northern Italy; and artists such as the Brescian painters Ceruti and Cifrondi worked with such themes. In his engravings, he recalls Gaetano Zompini. Londonio is also known for his scenography. An example, of this poorly conserved art form that still exists is a nativity scene on cut wooden shapes for the church of San Marco in Milan. The effect is a cheaper version of the naturalistic Sacri Monti scenes, which had been painted stucco statuary. It also can be seen as a cross between the holy scenes described above, and the theatrical set pieces, for example, those needed for the newly founded La Scala theater. The work at San Marco prompted Empress Maria Theresa of Austria...Category

- Study of Five Heads - Original Etching by J.-J. BoissieuBy Jean-Jacques de BoissieuLocated in Roma, ITStudy of Five Heads is a beautiful black and white etching with drypoint interventions on paper, realized at the end of XVIII century by the French artist Jean-Jacques de Boissieu (Lyon, 1736- 1810). Five study of heads of which two profiles (a female and a male) are lightly sketched with the drypoint technique, and we could appreciate the incredible draftsmanship. Instead, the bigger three portraits are very detailed and etched with a superb technique. Although the subjects are drawn in different scales and with different degrees of finish, each portrait has the dignity of a unique piece and the composition is very balanced. In particular on the lower margin at the center there is the portrait of "Le Père Cotrot, Garçon Teinturier à Lyon'", an elderly man, toothless and with a large-nosed, slightly turned to left, with a hat and unbuttoned jacket over waistcoat, shows all his wrinkles in a very realistic way. Signed on plate on lower right margin “De Boissieu”. This old master’s original print with fresh impressions, is in very good conditions, except for a usual yellowing of the paper above all on the edges and some signs of the time and light foxing along the margins, do not affect the image. Jean-Jacques de Boissieu (Lyon,1736 –1810) Jean-Jacques de Boissieu was a French artist studied at the École de Dessin in Lyon, but he was mostly self-taught. His first prints were realized between 1758–64. When he went to Italy in the retinue of the ambassador and Duc de la Rochefoucauld d’Enville, he had the lifechanging encounter: he met Voltaire and he entered in the world of luminaries, he had the opportunity of realizing some plates for the Diderot-d’Alembert’s Encyclopèdie. Then he continued to produce prints in Lyon, Boissieu made many etchings of the Roman and Dutch countryside, as well as the French countryside around Lyon, which earned him a reputation as the last representative of the older etching...Category
