About the artist
George Ernest Studdy (1878–1948) was a British illustrator and comic strip artist, best remembered for creating Bonzo the Dog, one of the earliest internationally celebrated cartoon animals. After training at the Heatherley School of Fine Art and the Calderon School of Animal Painting, Studdy began contributing illustrations to The Sketch and other periodicals in the 1910s. Bonzo’s debut in 1922 brought him widespread fame, leading to books, postcards, toys, and commercial merchandise. His prints remain enduring examples of early 20th-century popular illustration, combining humor, warmth, and anthropomorphic storytelling.
