Jacques Barraband, "Studies of Birds," from "Description de l'Egypte Histoire Naturelle,"engravings, printed in colour and finished by hand, published Paris 1809. Jacques Barraband is considered one of the great French zoological and botanical artists.e He Studied at the Academie royale de peinture under Joseph-Laurent Malaine. In addition to his bird and insect watercolors and drawings that became part of "Description de l'Egypte..", his most famous works include his illustrations for François Le Vaillant's scientific studies on parrots and birds of paradise. The monumental "Description de l'Égypte (English: Description of Egypt) was a series of publications, appearing first in 1809 and continuing until the final volume appeared in 1829, which offered a comprehensive scientific description of ancient and modern Egypt as well as its natural history. It was the collaborative work of about 160 civilian scholars and scientists, known popularly as the savants, who accompanied Napoleon's expedition to Egypt in 1798 to 1801 as part of the French Revolutionary Wars, as well as about 2000 artists and technicians, including 400 engravers, who would later compile it into a full work. The full title of the work is "Description de l'Égypte, ou Recueil des observations et des recherches qui ont été faites en Égypte pendant l'expédition de l'armée Française" (English: "Description of Egypt, or The Collection of Observations and Research made in Egypt during the Expedition of the French Armed Forces"). The natural historians of the Institute of Egypt, founded by Napoleon on the outskirts of Cairo in 1798, studied all of Egyptian native birds and took a keen interest in the ibis, which seemed to have a special place in Egyptian culture. The Ibis appeared frequently on tomb paintings, and the French found their mummified remains by the hundreds. Herodotus, the Greek historian, related a story told to him about the supposed annual invasion of Egypt by flying snakes, which was controlled by flocks of ibis flying out to meet and devour them. And the French found that, typically, the mummified remains of ibis specimens did have snakes in their stomach cavities. However, Jules-César Savigny, who investigated the habits of the ibis, discovered that the ibis eats shellfish, not snakes, and he noted that the embalmers had apparently been serving “truths deeper than mere facts of natural history.” Savigny’s treatise on the Natural and Mythological History of the Ibis was published in 1805, before any volumes of the "Description de l'Egypt..." had appeared, and so it was one of the first publications to appear in print that was based on research in Egypt during the Napoleonic campaign. With his precise methods of dissection and observation, combined with his knowledge of classical Greek and Latin authors, Savigny cleared up questions about both the history and zoology of the ibis. Savigny was twenty-eight years old when he finished writing his book on the ibis. He had been recruited to join the scientific contingent of the expedition to Egypt when he was only twenty-one, and he had been trained as a botanist, not a zoologist. Image size: 19 x 27 inches.
